Anybody has a spyderco mariner salt?
on: July 11, 2009, 01:58:39 AM
I'm looking at salt folders for a possible trip to new zealand next year, the mariner salt is almost twice the price of other salt series. Does anyone have it? Do you feel the extra price is justified over say pacific salt, or atlantic salt?

I wasn't going to consider it because of the price and weight, but a shop has it on sale for less than the usual retail (but still more than other models) so I'm thinking about it.

If it's the model C120 I picked one up at a knife shop on sale for US$115.00

Nice knife - BUT I like my Atlantic Salt #C89 PE for  US$63 a lot better - not as heavy and easier to grip when wet.

Not too keen on C120's  serrated blade, really like the PE on the C89
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Yep that's the one, $115 is about the price I can get it too. Not too keen on the handle either, heavy and slippery, but it's on sale.

two things that kind of get to me with the mariner.  one you mentioned with the slick handle.  would have to put a little grip tape on it perhaps.  the other thing is it's weight although not really heavy I look at the other salts like the atlantic and it's a fair bit lighter and that I like.  I was in at Warriors today and there it was though sitting tall and proud on 1/2 price.

That is actually where I was looking at! Man I wish I live close to there, then again it's probably the best that I don't for the sake of my wallet.

I really like the blade shape, but not so much the handle material. I think I'll pass on it in the end.

yeah after you had mentioned it on spydie forums I took interest and thought maybe for the price I would grab it.  but I would probably in the end go with the frn atlantic even though the mariner is a super price.  I really don't have as much a need for the blade shape either as I would say the pacific.

yeah I'm an hour and a bit away and spend way too much $$  :( there.
