Found a broken Case, any options?
on: July 14, 2009, 03:19:30 AM
Hi all,
I found a Case stockman that is really dirty and broken.  I don't know a lot about these except that I like them :D.  By broken I mean that when you turn it upside down the blades just open.  There is no tension at all.  Forgive my limited vocabulary...I'll try to explain this.  You know how when you open one of these the little metal pieces at the bottom pop up then down again when the blade is fully opened or closed...well one of those is not solid...it's cracked/broken.  So, bottom line, will Case fix this even though I didn't buy it?  I emailed them months ago, but never got a reply.  Anybody know?  Also, if anyone can correct my vocabulary and educate me about the proper terminology and workings of these types of knives, I'd be appreciative.  Have a great one.

Sounds like the backspring is broken. Can't help you on warranty thou, although sometimes it's better to just call a company, some of them rarely respond to email.

Wow, a broken spring on a Case.  Don't see that too often.

Yeah, that is something you don't hear alot of on a Case. Matter of fact this is the first I have heard of one in a very long time.

GraysonK,

What pattern of Stockman is it and how old? If you are not sure of this, you can take a picture of it's tang stamps and post it here and I'll be able to tell you.

Ok, I took some pictures.  It's pretty dirty looking as I haven't wanted to really mess with it in case I could get it fixed.  The letters and numbers on the sheepsfoot blade are 6318HP i think.  I'm not sure what pattern it is or how old it is.  Here ya go...it'll probably take 2 different posts.

I passed a rusted shut Sodbuster in the fleamarket a few weeks ago missing half its back spring.

I really wonder how people do it sometimes.

Oops.  Well I did call them and described the problem.  They said it did sound like a broken backspring and that it was a warranty issue.  However, they said that depending on what year, model, etc (i tried to ask about that but the lady I talked to didn't know) that they would either be able to repair it if they had parts or they would replace it.  But, if they replaced it I wouldn't get this one back.  They said I had to choose.  Other than finding it and thinking it's a pretty neat knife, i don't really have a lot of sentimental value attached to this.  So if they can't fix it, should I just get the replacement?  What do you think?  by the way, if anyone knows what year this model was made, I'd appreciate it.  I've got it narrowed down, I think, to the 1970's but I don't know.
Thanks,
Gray

I'd plump for a replacement if you've no attachment to it :)

I think I will.  Either I'll get fixed knife or a new one..either way it would be cool and then I'd have 2 case knives. :)

GraysonK,

Yeah, it's a 6318HP. Tang stamp puts it's manufacture between 1980-1989, actual year 1982. Pattern is a #18 Stockman at 3 5/8" closed. The HP means this version has both the Sheepsfoot and Spey blades. All blades are CV.

Man, all those blades look pretty fuul, too, so even though it is broken, it doesn't appear to have been used all that much for being an '82.  And it's a pretty knife too.  Brown bone CV.  I really hope they can fix it.

I'd send it in.  As it is you'll never use it, and if they can fix it all the better.
