CyberTool 29
on: July 15, 2009, 06:04:01 AM
Hey guys,

New to the forum, but I've got about 20 Victorinox Swiss Army Knives.

I've been trying for a long time to find the right EDC. I started with some of the Victorinox 91mm knives but found that they lacked some tools I wanted- namely exchangeable bits and pliers. I came to discover Leatherman multi-tools and carried some for a while but I missed the fit, finish, and ease of use of Victorinox knives. For my usage, I'd rather have something easier to carry and more importantly, easier to use. I wandered to the SwissTool Spirit, which is a great tool, but I again came to the realization that it was just a hassle to carry- and the Spirit doesn't even have the exchangeable bits.

The CyberTool 29 is a convenient size, it has thicker-than-normal liners which is great because it makes the tool feel very solid. I love having the driver variety, and there are some other nice touches. One of the most thoughtful things Victorinox did is give this blade a thicker blade tang, which makes the end of the blade sit higher so it's still easy to access even with the bulbous driver in front of it. A nice side effect is that unlike every otheßr 91mm I've owned, the large blade doesn't touch the liners and roll or chip.

Overall, I have to say that this is the most pleased I've been with a Victorinox product. I did have to swap the scales with a Tinker though. I've never been a big fan of the translucent scales.

I would speculate that it's because the parts and manufacturing cost for them is a LOT higher than most other SAKs, due to the bit driver and the bits themselves.

That said, I have one of the first CTs that I ever saw (at Frys in Campbell, back around 1996 or so) and I like it a lot.  I keep it in my desk at work because the bits are most useful there for fixing / fiddling with bits of office technology.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. The lesson I've been learning over the past year or so is that if you really want something but can get a cheaper version that you like less it makes financial sense to get the cheaper one. It makes sense, of course, until you keep trying buying the cheaper ones or replacing them more because you're not really satisfied. I went back and applied that to Swiss Army Knives and ended up less $60 but much more satisfied. It was either spend a little more now or keep replacing Tinkers as I strip out their drivers on the wrong screw head sizes.

Welcome to the forum.  I followed a similar path.  Used to carry round a Tinker at work, got a CT29 and then a CT Lite.  I then stopped working in IT and went back down to little SAKs but there you go :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I don't own a real Cybertool before i frequented this forum i bought a Fibortool that i bought on sale for 10.00. It is not bad for a cheap Chinese knock off but i want the real deal. After owning real SAKs knock offs don't interest me at all.
