help me pick a spider
on: July 19, 2009, 10:29:01 PM
whew... this place is expensive! i came here b/c i like SAKs and was searching for an MT. now i think i need a spider for some strange reason. i have researched until i'm blue in the face but still i can't decide.
i know i want an FRN spider with a PE and as light weight (emphasis on light weight) as possible. i don't care about a metal liner necessarily. weight utlilty and price is the utmost concern. i want the blade to be no more than 3 1/2" and no less than 2 3/4" yet when closed it should be no more than 4 1/2" but closer to 4". H1 steel is ok but i could care less whether the blade might rust if left in salt water for 2 years. it (the blade), should touch up good and quick and hold edge for a fair amount of use. i do not mind resharpening during heavey use or touching up from time to time.
it should be pedestrian. i do not care for embellishment or any kind. also, the entry cost should be minimum.
i have looked at the birds, tenacious and delica flavors but i'm getting confused among them. seams to me the birds are ugly (kinda), the tenacious is heavey, and the delica may be too big. help me decide?

I'm aiming for a delica or tenacious too, probably a delica to stay within the USA though...

I hate spending so much money on a knife, so... I may end up with a tenacious yet. :D

So someone help me choose too!

EDIT: Also, for you I'd say some variation of the Delica. XP

Size wise, the Centofante http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=24 and the Delica http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=209 would suit you well and are both light weight.  Take a look and see what you think.

The Salt 1 has no liners and is therefore pretty lightweight as well http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=40  Comes in yellow too.

Isn't there a new Native out? I think it might suit your needs.

Much as I like my Delica IV, I do find that it is only properly comfortable in a fairly standard grip.  Not that it's bad in others but it definitely seems to have one natural position to hold it in.  As always though YMMV.

If you can find one, the Delica 3  http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=8 (which is now discontinued) is even lighter as it doesn't have the steel liners.

I´d go for a Native. S30V steel and great handle ergonomics for a good price.
The Delica is just fine too. Great blades that Spyders  :tu:

Given the choice I'd certainly look at the Delica III, if for no other reason than i find the tip to thick on my IV.  Of course that was something they changed as a lot of people thought the tip on the III was to thin.  :D  It's all personal preference in the end.

I will say I don't think there are any that you'll be disappointed in, Spyderco don't really do bad knives.  :tu:

The new CF native is $$$$ and IMO not worth it.

If you can find a older s30v/frn one then it's a great deal, but I don't care for its aesthetics because of the wedge grind.

No offense to Spyderco but I agree, the byrd line is ugly.  I know that I'm an H1 nut and other probably already know that I'm going to suggest something in the Salt series.  Depends on what you are using it for.  IMO and experience, the H1 steel doesn't retain an edge as well as VG-10 but it holds it well enough.  This is just my experience...I'm not a steel junkie but I know what I like.  The H1 is incredibly easy to sharpen (for me anyway).  The Salt 1 sounds about right for your parameters.  It's not on the high end cost wise, it is a solid, light weight very usable folder.  Available in black or yellow and the blade is smaller than the delica (at least the delica I saw and compared it to...it might just be the shape of the blade).  Yes I'm a huge fan of H1 but from the sounds of what you want it would fit the bill nicely.  And the bigger thumb hole makes it really easy to snap open.  It will show slight scratches from use but they can be buffed out if you care about that.  And it will handle just about anything you throw at it.  It really is a great knife.  Granted, I haven't tried any other Spyderco's except the Tenacious (I agree about the size and weight), the Saver Salt (Serrated so doesn't qualify for your needs) and the Dragonfly (Which is too small for your needs).
Hope this helps, Let us know what you choose.

For what it's worth, I bought a Waved Delica 4 (VG-10 steel) a while back..maybe two years ago, and haven't bought a folder since.  I have no reason to.  The Delica is light, sharp, and fast with that wave feature.  It's also got four different positions you can put the clip on.

I would however like to get a partially serrated folder soon, possible a RAT Model 1.

Most of the ones around here carry Kershaw, Buck, Gerber, and LM.  The S30V Native is the only Sypyderco they carry well that and the Tenaious.

Walmart has discountinued native a year or two back, it was sold for $40 so if your has it for $35 it's cleaning them out. I'm suprised thou they still have any in stock.

Thanks a lot, now you've gone and upset my Meadowlark. Now I'm gonna have to carry him today, which will make my Vic Farmer mad because he thought he was gonna go out today.

Please be careful what you say, knives have feelings.

And yes, I DID get hit in the head yesterday, why do you ask?  :D

I would recommend a Spyderco Pacific Salt.
Lightweight FRN handle without liners, and a good rustproof steel which is easy to sharpen and also quite tough for a stainless steel. (40 % tougher than VG10 - source: Sal Glesser, owner of Spyderco)

Although edgeholding initially is AUS8-ish, after some use and several sharpenings it will become more VG10-ish.
I also discovered that you can speed up this process by powerstropping, for instance by using the polishing disc on the Paper Wheels set, which is what i use.
While i carry a yellow serrated version, it still has a small plain edge section just behind the tip, and for that i use the polishing disc.

I am very fond of my PE Pacific Salt and would have recommended it, but thought the dimentions of the Salt 1 fitted the requirements just a tad better.

Please hold your Meadowlark up to the screen so it can read this: I'm sorry, dear little Meadowlark.  That was a horribly insensitive thing to say.  You are perfect just the way you are and you shouldn't pay attention to this kind of stuff.
Now hold your Farmer up to the screen: Give Meadowlark a break and remember you have to share.
Hope this helps. ;)
