I finally got one! :D
on: August 15, 2009, 09:00:07 PM
As many of you know, I have a secret fetish for small fixed blades, and one that has been on my list for some time now is the Gerber River Shorty:

Well, I finally snagged it today.  After spending the morning wrestling the doors off my Jeep (I don't think they'd ever been removed and they were on there really, really good!) we decided to take a little drive.  Kim decided she wanted to go for lunch at a place in a local shopping district, so we went there.  When we were done eating I decided to head across the parking lot to the Outfitters there and take a look around.  I don't much care for the owner of this place, having dealt with him unsatisfactorily several times, and the place is a fraction of the size of my usual outfitters, Mountain Equipment Co Op, but I figured since we were there I'd go have another look.

I found a Nite Ize glowing collar for Daisy (who is mostly black, so it's easy to lose track of her at night) and as I walked towards the cash I stopped at the knife counter and there was the River Shorty.  I decided that for $40, it was worth picking up, and it's a good thing I did, as it was the last one in stock- I got the display model!

I just got home and I'm bloody exhausted (worked all night last night) so I'll take some pics after a little nap.  This one will probably end up as a gift for my father when I visit him next month, but until then I get an opportunity to play with a little knife that I've wanted to get my hands on for some time!

It's not that clear on the handle, but is it made in Italy?

Looks like a versatile little blade...what is the sheath like?

Always nice to snag something you've been after a while  :tu:

I'm guessing the handle is more comfortable than it looks  :think:
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

It is indeed made in Italy, which was a bit of a surprise- I assumed it would be made in Taiwan or China like many of Gerber's current offerings, and for the price I figured it wasn't USA made.

The handle is reasonably comfortable so far, although the emphasis is on being able to grip it no matter what.  Given that it's set up for river rafters and white water kayakers, I can certainly understand that.  I don't do much white water kayaking, as my 17 foot sea kayak wouldn't last too long- fiberglass is a little too fragile for that kind of activity!  Still, I get pretty wet from time to time and I can appreciate a really grippy handle.

I never saw that one before, which is probably the big reason!  :P  It does look interesting though:

An ideal water-sports knife for paddlers and divers. The titanium knife blade will not rust or corrode and the tanto tip reduces the chances of puncture wounds to yourself or your equipment.

    * 7.6cm partially serrated blade with tanto tip.
    * Integral line cutter.
    * Simple and secure, glove-friendly locking system releases with a squeeze of the handle.
    * Polycarbonate handle and sheath.
    * Secure attachment point for affixing to a PFD.

Interesting though, as I thought tanto points were designed to pierce armor and gut vistims, not to reduce the chance of puncturing yourself!

Well, they only have it on display behind glass with the rest of the knives.  :P

I think whoever wrote MEC's knife description doesn't know jack about knives, the tip was just flat and non-sharpened. I almost bought one since I wanted to see what's a titanium knife like, but eventually passed because since I don't do any watersport it's useless to me.

I think their 154cm knives are made in u.s., i.e. silver trident, applegate covert, and drop point gator. And their automatics obviously.
