"The Digger"(Australian Army Issue BO SwissTool)
on: July 20, 2009, 03:24:27 PM
I was piss my pants excited when I saw this on OZ ebay & had to nab it.This is the 2nd Australian Army Issue SwissTool I have owned , my first one found it's way too sunny England into Sir Duncalot's mit's. I was sad to see it go but I did end up with a Kershaw A100 so I should not whine  :D :D.
All is well, as my new one is , A NEW ONE  :o :o :o :D :D.That is right, so new the Black Oxide finish is still a bit tacky too touch(normal for new BO MT's) & I think it still has the factory applied lube emanating from various parts of it :o :D :D.
So what makes it an Australian Army Issue SwissTool, ahhh umm not a great deal  ::) ::) :D :D. It is essentially a standard SwissTool but it has the very cool military identification  markings on it .I know for a fact the Australian Army, Australian Navy use SwissTool's & I am 99% sure the Air Force does as well. There must be many 1000's of Military marked ST's floating around Australia , I have struggled to find many for sale.My first one , I bought it on a whim & the listing did not mention it's military past(the photo was terrible as well). The second one I have seen for sale is below  :P :D :D

New ST's military ID, surprisingly identical too the much earlier Dunc Digger below  :o
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Dunc/7034cecc.jpg[/img]]
So I guess the military markings is an item description as opposed too a service/time issued number

My new one look's like a 2005 plier head
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Dunc/858a184c-1.jpg[/img]]
My old one looks like a 1998 plier head. Looks like OZ armed services have been using ST's for awhile   :D

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll287/multimat426/Dunc/S6303067.jpg[/img]]

I did not think I would own another Armed SwissTool so I am very happy to have this one. I would like a satin finished ST(Navy or Air Force). My military tools/knives seem to be increasing in number  ::) :D :D.My old one, Dunc's, BO finish had faded too a very nice smokey black. The new one is VERY black  :D :D

Very cool mate.  8)  I'm guessing the mark will be a Quartermasters ID number.

That is interesting. Thanks for posting.

I think here in Canada, they like to use Gerber MP600s as standard military issue.
A little Leatherman information.

New Swisstool file [photobucket]
(Image removed from quote.)
The file on my 1998 Swisstool wouldn't strike a match (who polishes files?!)

When did Victorinox start making the file like this? It looks a lot like the one off the Spirit - it goes all the way to the tip and looks like it should work. 8) Have I not been paying attention?

Too bad the US Army doesn't issue a cool multi-tool. When I was in  we all had to buy our own. And back then the only thing available was the PST.

I'm so glad you got another one  :D I treasure mine and its up there with my Charles Elsener Sigature model .
The number is an issue a parts number and also I believe forms part of the NATO stock number . I think 5110 is related to hand tools if I remember correctly

I've just got in from work and I'm shattered but I will post more when I have time , but military issue multitools interest me very much .
