Ambassador.
on: July 20, 2009, 04:12:43 PM
Just got this through form Neil and I thought I'd do a little "first thoughts" bit on it.  The Ambassador comes from the Victorinox 74mm range and, though I've handled a couple before, it's the first one I've owned.

As you can see it has the exact same tool sat as the a Classic but in a larger frame.  I should point out here that Neil specifically got me one with a split-ring, the vast majority seem not to have one.  Ironically I don't have a Classic to do a side-by-side only a Bijou, essentially a Classic without a split-ring.  Even given the size difference I still think the 74mm works well as a key-ring SAK so the inclusion of the ring was important to me.

One of the most important features on a SAK for me is the scissors and I always make sure I have some on me.  I find they cause far less of a stir amongst the non-knife people for a lot of cutting jobs, and are far better at trimming my nose hair than a saw ( :P Mike  :D).  Here is a quick shot of how the sizes from several SAKs compare (58, 74, 84 and 91mm).  In truth the scissors aren't that much bigger than on a Classic.

For me the big advantage has to be in the main blade.  The extra size makes it much more useful, plus the extra length in the handle makes the SAK much more controllable and give more confidence in use.

All in all I'm very happy with the Ambassador as a supplemental SAK, but I don't think it will ever be my only EDC.  Not until they add a bottle opener anyway.  :D

Ironically Neil, my daughter helped me open the package and on seeing the Ambassador she instantly declared "mine " .  When I asked her why she thought it was hers she said "because it's small Daddy".  :D

Now she keeps trying to grab it from me shouting "mine, mine ,mine please Daddy mine".  not quite yet I think but maybe someday.  :)

Thanks for the pics mate.  Not handled an ambassador before, but from using Classics I can see where the longer blade would be handy.  I though the scissors would be a bit longer on the 74mm (I haven't got one yet).

Looks like I'll have to add another SAK to the 'to buy' list :)

I love the 74mm's as there a real step up in capability over the 58mm, for not much in the way of size :)

I think I'd miss the nailfile to much to make it a practical key ring knife for me (why I prefer my Exec :)) but it's a fine knife for all that :)

Good luck pursuading little one that it's not her's :D

Thanks man, I suddenly seem to have Gollum rather than a daughter.  :D

I forget the Exec has the longer nail file compared to the Ambassador's.  Frankly i don't use them that much anyway so it really doesn't bother me.

I'm quite fond of the 74mm line, I agree that the scissors offer very little over the 58mm but the blade is of a size I can safely use.    I normally carry a modified one with the bottle opener from a 58mm added to it.  That has temporarily been misplaced  ::) so I'm presently carrying an Executive.

Here's an older variant. That arrived in my SAK fix package from Tim this morning.   :mail:

I spent this afternoon gently polishing it, whilst getting "the look" from my wife :D

That is nice. I don't think I've seen a pinned Cellidor 74mm before.

Well done on the polishing but is it shiny enough for reflecto...? ::)

Its my only pinned 74mm, so I was pretty chuffed to get it.

Sorry, not that high a gloss ;)   I'm always paranoid about damaging the edge of the scales where they meet the liner on these old ones so take it easy on them.  You'll like the silver classic I've just taken to mirror finish though
