Gerber's at Target
on: November 23, 2009, 08:26:28 PM
I saw these at Target this weekend, I think they may just have them for Holiday sales.

Anyone own either or both, would you recommend them?

Suspention?

They also carry the Ripstop, but I don't have a picture handy.

I have mixed feelings about it amongst myself! :D

It's not the toughest tool on the market and there have been a few stories of them falling apart under light use. I have one, and it was a gift from my kids, so I make point of using it from time to time and it's been absolutely fine for me with light use.

I would summarise by saying that it isn't as reliable as a Leatherman Wave or a Victorinox Spirit, but then again - it ain't in the same price bracket as the Wave or the Spirit either. It may therefore be considered reasonable value for money - just a thought!

I don't have a Ripstop, but it's apparently a variant of the Gerber "Suspension Line", there are some others too, like the Tread and maybe some more - not sure.
I used to come here a lot.

Thanks that link was great.  I knew there must have been something about it around here, I just needed to go back a few more pages, or learn to use the search feature...

I think my brothers and sons might see one in their stockings.

The Suspension (or any of its clones like the Ripstop) are probably okaaaaaaay.....

...but I'll bet your brothers and sons would appreciate a Leatherman Kick or Fuse a lot more seagullplayer. :tu: (at about the same price too)

Get the Kick in the gift tin at Target.  The tins are useful for holding various bits, or you can dump your daily edc at the end of the day into them.

I'd say the Suspension is GREAT as an entry tool. Spring loaded pliers and one-handed outside-opening blades make a great light tool at a very reasonable price. :tu:

In all seriousness though, it's a great toy and a decent tool for the price. It's been proven that the quality control kinda sucks, but eh, the one I have hasn't had any problems. I've never built a closet with it though. ::)

So if it breaks I'm sure it'd get them asking, "Is there better out there?"
Always a good thing. :2tu:

So yeah, just make sure they're not gonna be doing industrial work with it... or something.

EDIT: I'm also pretty sure people have only had a problem with the pliers, the rest of the tools are fine though I think some people complain about the design of the phillips. :P

I've owned a Suspension for a couple of years and it's been used a lot around the house with no issues whatsoever.

The very nice spring loaded pliers make it my favorite multi for any sort of electrical work.  I've abused the pliers by twisting sidewise with them to snap off chunks of wall paneling without any problem.

The outside opening plain edge, serrated blade, and scissors are all very nice.  The woodsaw is short, but works quite well.

Phillips driver is of the flattened variety, but it works fine for light to medium tasks.  The slothead drivers work fine.

The one implement that is horrible is the canopener.  It will open a can, but takes some patience and makes a ragged mess of the lid.

Lockup is secure on all implements.

All in all, I love my Suspension.  I use it more than any of my other multis, which I admit are probably heavier duty than the Suspension, but also cost about twice as much.

Thanks for the input guys.

I am sure my adult sons would be happy with it, it would see pretty light duty with both of them, at least until I am dead, they get me to fix everything now...

But my youngest brother is an industrial maintenace man, his could see some serious duty, if he liked it.
I might look at going up a motch for his gift.

I didn't see the leatherman at the Target I was in, but I did find in on the website, I will have to ask at the store.

You may want to look at eleatherman.com for the Leatherman, or watch EDCSource for either one or a Victorinox Spirit. :)

Nope Hair is now long again and I am back. Unfortunatly so is the Gerber Suspension. I still cant believe that Gerbers brain children at R&D havent been tortured for the design of that piece of crap. I mean really what were they thinking?

I would pick the Kick!!

The Suspension was the multitool that peaked my interest in multitools. I picked up a Gerber brochure and read with fascination. Then I googled it which brought me to this very site and one of hawkchucker's rants on the Suspension

This made me consider the Leatherman. I was lucky and got a Leatherman Squirt and Wave at almost half the retail price  :ahhh

I am very glad with my purchases; they just ooze quality. The bottom line is I totally recommend the Wave to all; while price is an issue you do a get a tool for life
