SAK SOS! Help me decide!
on: July 29, 2009, 06:20:06 AM
Hey guys... and gals! :D

I don't own any SAKs, but am interested in getting at least one, just because I know how good they are, and how much most of you all love them. I don't have any idea what I am looking for though, probably a Vic, but that's about as far as I can get. With all the choices it's driving me crazy!  :ahhh

If you have any advice for a fairly basic SAK, or at least one that would have enough tools to give me a full taste :climber:, give me some advice! PLEASE!  :D

I'd go with an Explorer if you want gadgets, Farmer/Soldier for a tough pocket knife, or a Tinker/Spartan if you have no idea whatsoever and want it cheap. :D

Then you just end up with every model every existing.

#1 choice: the GREATEST Vic has ever made, the Tinker.
2-layers for comfortable pocket carry, less than 20 bucks, has everything you really need except pliers, and has nothing you don't really need.

If you can pocket carry a thicker SAK or prefer belt carry:
-Super Tinker adds scissors for 3-layers
-Mechanic adds pliers for 3-layers
-Deluxe Tinker adds scissors and pliers for 4-layers

Finally, bigger SAKs for belt or back pocket carry:
-One Hand Trekker
-New Swiss Army Knife
-German Army Knife
These three are very similar and are the most capable 3-layer SAKs made by Vic.

My face is the Craftsman as it has the all the basics covered including a small but decent pair of pliers. It really depends what you want it for... the choices are many as you can see!  :climber:

Vic Ranger. Has everything you'll need. The Explorer is a cute package but I'd got for that after the Ranger. If you need pliers go for nothing less than the Swisstool. Pricy, but you lucky lot still have eb*y over there. From there it's a slippery slope...

I still think of the Huntsman as the basic SAK unit, or a Fieldmaster is you like the Phillips more.  I genuinely think of other SAKs in terms of Huntsman with bits missing or bits added.

If you have any advice for a fairly basic SAK, or at least one that would have enough tools to give me a full taste

Felinevet has this pre-owned Victorinox Tinker available for only 7 bucks including shipping:

He also has one with black scales for the same price:

These are probably the best SAK buys anywhere on the net.

Trust me, Tinker is the absolute best of the 'basic' SAKs.

I'm surprised nobody suggested the Compact yet. It's one of the best SAKs in my book, second only to the original Yeoman...

You're right Noth the Compact is a great SAK.  :tu:  I'd still get a Huntsman as a first SAK though.  :)

I just got my first one: a Cadet.  Only got it yesterday, but I love it already.  I also want the Tinker, but for a first one to try out I couldn't be more pleased with the Cadet.  It's extremely light weight, feels awesome in my hand and alox rocks!  :)  At some point I'll probably get the Tinker as well, but I highly recommend the Cadet if you want to get a feel for them and don't need a lot of tools.  It really is sweet.

Not the same as taking your time, deciding on what you want and then saving up and going on the hunt for one though.  :tu:

Well, I was told that I am an accumulator of interesting objects.  :pok: :D

Shane769. If you haven't gone to the SAKWiki site yet, you should take a look there before you make your selection. That site is an excellent way to see the differences from model to model. I was terribly lost until I found that web site...interestingly separate from this forum (they are all related)

For me this is down to the fact that I couldn't, in good conscience, recommend a Wenger over a Vic.  Like you I don't actively dislike Wenger's it's just that I'd almost always go for a Vic first.

Wenger have lots going for them, but for a very first SAK I'd always go for a Vic.

Yeah, wut he said  :)

Farmer or (old) Soldier and a minichamp (or manager) to start. See what tools you use most and then you'll be able to decide which of the bigger ones you need, or at least what order to get them in.

+1 for the climber, but it's either just a huntsman without the saw or a super delux tinker with a corkscrew instead of the philips

But you can get it in stayglow  :tu:
