Got a bunch of parts off of ebay..
on: May 01, 2007, 04:36:21 PM
Can anyone identify the handles in this lot?

I was almost outbid (I think I set the limit to $31.99).  This should be a cool project to tinker with...

I can't make out the stamping; what does it say?

There are no holes for covers or lock bars, so they aren't from a PowerLock; They're from either an old PowerPlier or current Pocket PowerPlier.

Nice haul!  I have a plier head from an EOD model but not the rest of the parts to go with it.  I guess I should have kept a better eye open!

I can't make it out either, but I think in the description he states that there's parts for a complete Power Plier...so that's what they must go to.  Sometimes (lots of times actually) listings on ebay aren't totally accurate, so I thought I'd get some professional opinions 8)

Wow! That is quite a collection of tool parts.

The handles are from the PowerPlier and there is a full nose PowerPlier head there.  Also, there is a EOD PowerLock head, Paratool head, and various other components.  Have fun with these and let us know what end up doing with the parts.

I cant wait to try the diffrent saw blades...I have the one with the biggest teeth right now on my PowerLock, and it isn't that great (well, compared to the saw on my OHT!!).

I assume the ParaTool head can only work with a ParaTool body...I never really looked at the mechanics of that in any pics.

Yup, you're right, the ParaTool doesn't work like most conventional multitools. The way the pliers fold out from the side....they require a large "window" to be cut from the sides of the plier handles.

Maybe the ParaTool plier head you get can be used on some sort of custom Mod, with handles built from scratch?

Nice!  Let me know when you want to start trading SOG parts!  ;)  I need a large slotted driver for a PowerLock.

I stared at the photos trying to figure out what went where but I'm still not confident about any conclusions.  I think the Paratool may have been an older model.  Although all the SOGs currently use the same parts, the older SOG Paratools used a different design for the blades since they had no need for locking parts (the Powerlock wasn't even around yet).  The older SOG parts probably won't lock in a PowerLock--I think I've tried unsuccessfully in the past.  I think the two identical large flat drivers (far right in the Ebay photos) might be the newer design.  The other flat driver is probably from an older model Paratool.

It'll be difficult for me to find something that you don't already have in duplicate or triplicate!  :o  Maybe you'd be interested in trading for one of those Paladin Punch and Wirestripper combo dealies???  I also have extra saws and probably some other parts but you've got quite a few of those already from the looks of those Ebay photos.

Have any spare V-cutters?  The wire stripper thing looks interesting also..I needed one badly last Friday fixing some electronics at work..

Once I get this stuff (which should be soon), I'll sort it out and build a Pocket Plier.  I'll make a list of what's left (and what has that locking notch and what doesn't)

Does anyone know if the folks at SOG (Chris 8) ) would sell a pair of handles (even used) for a PowerLock or Paratool?  The plier heads are useless without the correct handles..

Ordinarily they don't supply handles or heads, and they say if anything goes wrong with them, please send them in to SOG.  Given the situation you are in, anything is possible.  We'll see what he has to say next time he drops by.

Got the parts today, along with the items I bought from Def, which made for a good Monday after work.  I put a Power Plier together!

Awesome!

How did you decide on that arrangement?  Or is that just temporary?

Glad to hear the package I sent got there safely.

I basically used one of every impliment as long as it fit.  Although I took out the one spacer I had and put another large flathead in it's place, so now I have two; one on either side of the Phillips head :)  I guess one can be used as a scraper.

Another note; does it seem that every time you buy a used tool, there's some kind of black gummy substance caked on it somewhere?  Usually on the knife blade...what do people DO with their tools..or the wrong tools I should say.  The previous owner used these parts, but after a little cleanup, it's as servicable as a brand new tool..which I guess is a testament to good engineering/manufacturing.

And amid all those parts...I got a Robertson impliment!  Are those rare at all?  I've never come across any Robertson screw ever..

Robertson screws are very common in Canada, and that screwdriver is available from SOG.  It's not rare per se, but it isn't common outside of Canada.  They've been around since WWII.

If you don't have a need for it, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.  Let me know what you'd like for it if you are willing.

As for the screwdriver, I'd probably either file an edge on to it to use as a chisel, or cut a small notch or arc into it to use it on a firesteel or wire stripper.  But then I'm not a big fan of flatheads on a multitool as you may have noticed in many of my reviews!

It came off a garbage multi...the only worthwile peice.  It clicks open great in the SOG, but closed it rattles a little..a tiny washer on either side would help that.

And you can close it with a bit in place without interfering with the plier head.  I don't carry bits, or really have the need to turn uncommon screws, so I left it out.  Nice to know it works though in case I ever need to carry one.

Shipping for a small cardboard envelope to Canada shoulden't be more than $1-$2 right?  I'll send it off tomorrow..should I use the return address from the package you sent me?

Neat idea to use the generic adapter!     I wish SOG had used a similar design rather than the 1/4" drive adapter thing-a-ma-jig.

I agree...if I'm using sockets, there's a 99.9% chance a dedicated ratchet is with them, so I've never used the 1/4" adapter on my SOG.

I might put that bit adapter back in, and buy a few cheap bit sets at the flea market and keep both in my car.
