OUCH!!
on: May 02, 2007, 07:15:28 PM
Apparently this guy has had some issues with his SideClip....

For those Youtubely challenged folks, this SideClip broke in this guy's hand.  The plier head snapped where it attaches to the handle.  Nasty stuff.  I wonder if he knows about Leatherman's warranty?

Ouch indeed! Looks like the plier head itself broke right next to the pivot.   :(

That looks like a knockoff...I think he said "Leatherman" because it's like saying "Kleenex" when you want a tissue...the name becomes the item..

It has to be one of three things.
 1.It's a knock-off
2. He was using well beyond it's intended use,and not telling the whole story
3. Bought it used, and it was majorly abused before he got it.

Why don't you post a video on youtube back to him saying that there is a warranty.  Also ask him where he got it for 20 bucks  LOL

No way you can (or ever could) buy a SideClip new for $20.

Yeah,  you're probably right,  I've heard many people refer to any multi-tool as Leatherman.  Shows the value of getting to the market first.

I agree, he said "Leatherman" but he meant "multitool". Just like here in italy, in the early 80's, people used to say "a Sony" (or "a Walkman") but they meant "a portable audio player".

Anyway, that looks dangerous! Squeezing the tool and making its handles snap like that is the last thing I want to happen when I'm working.  :o

That's exactly what I was thinking. Pinching your skin is already painful, but when the handles crush on your finger...

Hey guys, I checked it out and judging by the rivits, clip and notch on the handle where the adapter would go........ :o it is a real leatherman sideclip. Heck the moron could send his $20 crap to me and I would send it in to leatherman for repair. People like that don't deserve good tools.    I miss the slideclip, it was a good tool.

I sent the clip to my contact at Leatherman to see if they wanted to do anything about it.  My guess was that it was real as well, but even if it isn't I am certain Leatherman wouldn't want their name advertised like that!

What can they do about it though?

We didn't actually SEE the tool break..the kid started out with it in two peices...he was probably doing something with it he shoulden't have, and busted it.  Does he look strong enough to snap off the handle during normal use?

Maybe, maybe not.

I am not suggesting that Leatherman do anything about it mind you, but in a situation like this one, if Leatherman was to contact the kid, give him the benefit of the doubt and offer to exchange it with a newer, current issue model like the Kick (emphasizing the newer, stronger plier head), it might be well worth the effort a hundred times over to them.  You can't buy advertising that good.
