Been hanging with a solider
on: August 05, 2009, 09:37:13 PM
This week I am on vacation and trying to to spend a whole lot of time on the computer. I wanted to let you folks know I have been trying something completely different for me. Instead of carrying a one hand opening folder or multitool I have  been carrying a '03 Vic Solider. So far this little unassuming guy has done everything I have asked of him, I have not had a reason for a pair of pliers yet so I will cross that bridge when I get there. So far the soldier is doing much better than carrying a traditional slipjoint without the cap lifter and other extras. I think I may end up carrying it for a while, slightly have that one hand opening it's but I am fighting it  ;) How many of you folks on here carry a solider on a routine basis and how well does it take care of your needs?

Really like the form factor, though

Same here, I'm a Farmer guy :)

But that's enough to see you through most of life's hassels, and so would a Soldier :tu:
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I think the Huntsman is worth a mention too. While it hasn't got as stout a blade as the Soldier/Farmer, it has a saw too and then the scissors which make it possibly the most useful of all. But :b2t: the Soldier is a great little tool  :D

+1 on the Huntsman - one of the best SAKs of all IMHO :tu:
That said, if you need scissors with your alox model a Classic or similar isn't much extra to carry :)

Thinking about getting one of those mods that lets you have an alox with scissors (like a farmer but with scissors instead of the saw).  :sak:

I've got quite a lot of love for my Solider so far, only got it last month.  I really appreciate that the blade is thicker and they seem to latch firmer than a standard SAK.

I've got a Huntsman to but prefer the slimmer Alox it just feels right  :D

yes exactly my thoughts.... the soldier is tops in my book for size and feel. i have never felt like i was handicaped with mine though i do carry a 58mm as well.
apt as not i could have need of a saw which is the only reason i would choose the farmer over the soldier. that said i am a big fan of the soldier. it's perfect really.

I love my Huntsman.  It really has a different blade than a Soldier/Farmer?

Much as I like the Soldier/SI family , I have tried to EDC them , I keep comming back to the Question , " why not a Farmer " . Weight difference is minimal , function is greatly improved , and grip ergos are better .

Yes there noticably larger, deeper and thicker on the Alox range :)
