Ever tried to sell something but hesitate?
on: August 17, 2009, 10:56:39 PM
So I was cleaning out unused stuff and plan to sell them. But as I'm ready to take photos, I'm having second thoughts. Of them some are discontinued, some have gone up in price quite a bit since I bought them. If I want to reaquire any of them it could cost a lot more than what I'd get for them right now. Now I'm hesitating, and reconsider if I should sell them.

Arg, hard decisions.  :(

Yep, all the time.  I keep thinking about selling my timekeeper, but then I carry it, and fall in love with it all over again.

Been there mate.

Unless you really need the cash for something else then I say keep it (that's my logic anyway).  That way you always have the opportunity to sell it again in the future, but if you did part with it, when it's gone it's gone.

My philosophy is simple, if you have it, keep it. It makes life simple.

Nice philosophy, but sadly not everyone here is always in the position to follow it.

Well...I went through the starving student who couldn't find a job to save his life phase for quite a few years.

Even when I didn't have 10 cents to rub together, if I had item A, and felt that to get item B, I would have to sell item A, then I would reconsider. My rational is that if I truly wanted item B, then I can put aside item A and save somewhere to get item B. I would do this because I had the same thoughts about item A when I first got it. It didn't owe me anything as I already owned it. This would mean it might take me a while to get item B, but by the time I had the funds saved, I truly knew I wanted item B.

Yes, like everyone else in my family, I tend to be a pack rat. Speaking of which, I finished cleaning out my garage earlier this month. I threw away 2-30 square cubic meter waste bins; Mostly the family's stuff that hadn't seen the light of day in 8+ years. That felt liberating. I can't see me cleaning out the MT/SAK collection though. Perish that thought.

To the OP, if you are hesitating, then don't do it. It does not owe you anything to keep and enjoy it as you already have it. If on the other hand, it is a dust Queen that you don't care about, then by all means, sell it, give it, or toss it.

The thing is I'm trying very hard to keep myself from becoming a collector (so the selling isn't intended to fund new stuff), which is a huge money hole as you know. So I've set rules that if it's not getting used it's gotta go, obviously trying to stick to it isn't as easy as making it.

I have a different but more logical philosophy...

If you won't use it, don't keep it. :D

I'd rather have money in my savings account than a low-risk "investment" in tools... :D

I do... I have no idea as to if I want to keep my BSA Yeoman Plus (minus eyeglass driver)... I mean the true Yeoman, too, not the Explorer in drag. ._.

On one hand, it's collectible, on the other, I don't really need it. ~_~

Everything I sell I regret.  Most of the time I regret it twice.  Once when I list it, and once when I send it out...

That's the reason why I won't sell any more firearms.  At times I could really use the money, but I can't stand the regret I feel after I sell one...

Another rule of mine...I never collect anything as an investment even though it may have great value. I never plan on selling, so it can never be considered an investment. I do my investments at the bank.

I view collecting as just another hobby. Hobbies are things you are not supposed to make money on, but get tremendous enjoyment in the hunt, acquisition, display, etc...

Jsmtl, maybe you only need a very small collection where you can rotate your EDC on an as need basis. This would solve some of your current hesitations. Only you know what is right for you.

Lesson I learned, gut feeling are usually right. When you hesitate keep it for awhile, multitools are not like cheap cars, value does not, for most of multitools anyways, does not go down.

What do you mean you're not a collector? We all saw that photo of your display case in another thread...  :D :D

Seriously though, I know what you are going through. You will make a few mistakes once in a while and regret giving a particular item away. It happens. Accept it. It's not the end of the world.

If you really, really want an item back one day, it can usually be found anyway. It might cost a lot more and take a little patience, but you can usually get another.

If you really think any of your items are going to appreciate so much that you can never afford them again, hang on to them as an investment and sell them later. The rest can be replaced.

You have to make quick decisions and stick with them with this stuff or you'll never get through it. If you are really torn about something, put it in a box and check again 3 months and see how you feel then.

Remember, it's all just "stuff". A lot of it stuff that you don't use anyway...  ;)

Seller's Remorse is pretty common with me.  There's been a few times when I listed something for sale but changed my mind so I cancelled the listing or marked the price up so noone will want it.

If I have something that I don't use or haven't even thought about in the longest time, I'll sell it.  I'd rather get money for it and put it towards something else I want at the moment (most likely other impulse buys) than have it sit around and collect dust.  I do collect and will hang on to certain items but if someone wants a particular item and will give it a good home or get good use out of it, I'll usually sell it with no regrets.
