40th Anniversary of Moon Landing
on: July 21, 2009, 01:55:12 AM
Simply amazing, isn't it?  Especially considering we haven't accomplished a whole heck of a lot since then as far as space travel/exploration goes...

Still, that doesn't take anything away from Neil Armstrong for really going where no man has gone before.

Mythbusters is a rerun tonight, but it's the episode where they try to "fake" the moon landing.  Fascinating, since they are the ones that would be able to do it if it could be done!

:D

I'm 34 and i hope we make it back to the moon before i kick.  :-\

I think we need to private-tize (sp?) space travel because it's obvious we are going nowhere with Nasa these days.

Maybe Weyland-Yutani, The Umbrella Corporation, Omni Consumer Products (OCP), or Cyberdyne Systems could throw some cash toward space travel.

I have a pretty darned good plan to get to the Moon.... maybe one of these days we'll do it as a group Multitool.org project!  :D  Of course, in my plan, the moon is only a stepping stone to the Red Planet.  You need to have a staging area for something like that or you are screwed- at least in my opinion!

For mechanically-minded tool lovers like ourselves, NASA's step-by-step account of how they built the spacecraft for the moon program is a fascinating read:

Link: Chariots for Apollo

I've read and re-read the whole thing three times now. Amazing history for those who are into that sort of thing. :)

That is some fascinating stuff. I have always been interested in the space program. I hope that NASA makes it back to the moon in my lifetime.

Mans natural urge to explore has gotten pretty thin...but imagine the money, time, energy and manpower could be spent on space travel if America wasn't mired down in *ahem* "other things".

We've mapped every corner of the surface and the depths of the ocean, the mountaintops, the valleys...everything.  The next logical step is to explore space.  And by getting to that point, we'd need to develop an alternate energy source.  Or I should say harness a new energy source.  The things we would have to develop and the problems we'd have to solve by getting to another planet would be just as beneficial if not more than the actual mission.

Yes, a big  :salute: to all those who pushed forward space exploration, especially to the team that put Apollo 11 on the moon.  I do consider Mars to be the next step and I suspect the race is on with China.

True, but it's not just the US. Imagine how great this world would be if we ALL spent our time helping other people and doing things for the betterment of mankind.

I just picked up Rocket Men from the library last week.  Its a real interesting book documenting what it took to get the moon, and the struggles the astronauts had with one another...No one really liked Buzz Aldrin.

Not long finished Buzz's latest book. He had a hard time after all the fuss died down: depression, alcoholism - living up to the 'hero' he became - good honest read.

I can believe it. After you've been the first humans to land on the moon, what else in life could compare? :-\

Not like you can say "That was great!  Next year lets do Mars."  It does make a lot of sense :(

(Image removed from quote.)

A benchmade on the moon,,,,,THIS proves that the moon landing was a HOAX CONSPIRACY!!!
"Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall;
Some run from breaks of ice, and answer none:
And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169
