Give me some advice on a Spyderco Military
on: August 23, 2009, 08:11:59 AM
Like I said in another thread a local gun shop just starting carrying Spydercos. I picked up an Endura and really like it. But really wanted the awesome looking Military with digicamo scales. I'm not to sure about carrying such a large knife. I know some of you guys have a Millie. Is is to much knife to carry every day? What are the reactions of non knife people when you pull is out and use it around them? Give me some idea of the positives and negatives with this legendary knife. I have to pass this shop every day on my way to work and the Millie is calling my name.

Well, where do you live? What is your work environment like? Is it legal to carry in your state and municipality?

Personally, I would have no problem carrying the Military. I work around people familiar with knives and generally approving of their use. I also live in an area with a lot of hunters and outdoorsmen. I think that if you use it around someone and they take issue with it they were most likely going to have issue with any knife that is not a keychain knife. So long as the person does not possess any negative actionable ability over you I would not worry about reaction and just do your best to throw out some positive vibes for knife users.

Positives/Negatives?

It's a big blade, and is very strong. There were reports elsewhere that someone had used it in conjunction with a large Mag-Lite to baton through a car door to egress from a vehicle. It carries very light and has a very ergonomic handle that appears to be very responsive to both regular use and use with heavy gloves.

The larger size and digital camo may be off putting to some regular people but as stated above, if they have no power over you don't worry about their reaction so much. The only negative for the actual knife is that it is a liner lock and isn't lefty friendly (IIRC you aren't left-handed so this point doesn't matter). But they are making a lefty version soon.  :)

I say go for it, it's an iconic knife for the company and has a solid design backed up by many users.

P.S. What price are they asking?

Thanks Spoony for your thoughts. I thought you would chime in on this one. I live right on the GA and NC state lines in the mountains. There are two large national forests within twenty miles of my house so it's a very outdoor recreational orientated area. I have always carried a knife at work as do some other guys and have never had a problem. As for the digicamo scales, I really like the look of them. I have two other Spydercos with black G-10 scales and thought that this one would make a good difference. I handled it the other day and was surprised by how light it was for it's size. They were asking $141 for it.

Sounds like you should be fine in your area. I like the Digital Camo scales too, just haven't been able to find a cheap one on the seconday market yet. $141 is a really good price for an actual store, heck Knifecenter lists it for $140 and they're really good about Spyderco prices. Should come out close to the same price shipped from an online store with the local sales tax, but you get the added bonus of not having to wait a week for it to come in the mail. Post some pics when you get it.  :)

I've seen them online for around 120 USD :) for Digicamo :)

Add about 7ish for the shipping...

I have two Military's and one Para.  In my opinion they are the best large folding knife on the planet!
I can carry one in my shorts pocket without too much discomfort.  When summer ends here I plan to carry them alot more with jeans.
It's a quality blade coupled with great G-10 scales.  Ergonomically the handle is big and comfortable.  The blade is flat ground and long enough to tackle just about any job I have.
Every once in awhile you grab hold of a knife and instantly can feel and see the quality.  The Spyderco Military and Para are such knives.

Cheers,
Sean

I used to EDC a military but ended up selling it. I feel the handle is too oversized, there is really no need when the blade is 4" long, a regular sized handle is plenty. The clip has sharp edges and snag on stuff, unlike the rounded edge on hourglass shaped clips. Also don't quite like how a big chunk of the knife is sticking out of pocket when clipped.

I like it very much so far. I carried it at work today and for it's size it's very light. I think it's lighter than the Manix2 I was carrying. It's nice to have at least one large folder in my collection. And I must say that it is laser sharp. I kinda like how it rides high in the pocket when clipped as well. I'll give it more carry time but I like it so far. The hardest part about getting it was not carrying my Manix2. I absolutely love that knife.

Hard(er) core Spydie fans usually say that after a week carrying the Millie, everything else just seems too small. I couldn't agree more. The folder is slim and lightweight.

As it is my personal favorite folder, and I own and rotate seven Millies, let me share with you what I've learned elsewhere. No better way to carry a Millie in jeans, and still be able to use the right front pocket for anything else. I've done this to all my 501s, sewn a divider that creates a pocket within the pocket. Enough height to be able to easily grab and pull the knife, just wide enough not to waste space:

That's actually a great idea... :tu: But I would probably sew my fingers to the pocket instead... :P  :D

That's a cool idea crocodilo. Useful for carrying other stuff too.
