Anyone else come across this problem?
on: August 25, 2009, 02:36:15 AM
I got a plain edged OHT today and noticed when folding the saw back into the handle, the teeth hit the outer liner!  I've got to kind of guide it back into the handle instead of using my index finger to snap it shut one handed (like my old OHT).

Maybe mine has a thinner saw than yours, but my saw has ample clearance on either side, whether between it and the liner, or between it and the blade.  I do know it's been a documented issues with others, though, too.  Plus, I don't snap my tools shut, unless I'm in a hurry. ^^;

I have had that problem sometimes with 91mm and smaller SAKs.

I am not recommending you do this, but I was sometimes able to jerk the implements back in place so that they didn't hit the liners anymore.

I would probably just send yours in under warranty though.

Same problem here, I don't think it's anything wrong with the knife, just saw can flex sideways and catch on liner sometimes.

I've heard others mention it, but I've never had that problem, I've used the saw a number of times in anger and it closes as well now as it ever did.

oh hey, welcome to Leatherman's premium line of tools.  I have the Charge ALX and both the diamond file and the saw have to be guided back in so they don't scrape against the Aluminum scales.

Isn't an OHT a One Handed Trekker made my Victorinox?

Duly noted on the Leatherman Charge though. I have a few like that myself.

I meant it as leatherman has this same issue with some of their multi's.  You are right though.   :)

Got it.

I checked my OHT and it doesn't have that issue. Neither does the Jump Master I have.

 :b2t:

Yep, I've had that on Vics. before.  Not sent any back as a quick bend of saw brought it back into alignment, problem solved.  Shouldn't really get past QC like that though :(
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

The saw actually doesn't close all the way if it isn't guided back into it's slot.  The front teeth hang up (and are biting into)the steel of the liner.  I've noticed that when the main blade is open, the saw closes freely..

I'm afraid to lightly bend the saw because it might snap.

It's aggrivating because it's not a huge problem where I'd send it in for warranty repair/replacement...but it's just a little nagging feature :P

I might try to slightly bend it into place.. :-X

If it makes you feel any better I've never managed to snap a saw.  In fact I wonder how much it'd take to snap one?  Might have to have a look in my bits box for a worn out one; I knew there was a reason I don't throw anything away :D

I wonder if it is torsion or flexure that snaps the saw?

Alright the saw seems OK now.  I think it may have been how the blade, saw and can opener were situated on the pin.  I put pressure on the saw and main blade and the saw now snaps sut without hanging up on the liner :tu:

Yes, you try to realign the base on the pin versus bending the implement so it fits. A strong brief jerk or two near the base of the implement usually does it if it is going to work at all. At least, that's what I was quasi-recommending.

Update for me:  Despite never having used the saw on my OHT, apparently it has hit the liner at least once before, seeing as some of the teeth toward both the point and the hilt have damage, furthermore, my saw has leftover metal fragments from casting, too. :/

Funny, the teeth on my saw are not damaged from smacking into the liner...but the liner has two perfect teeth marks in it!
