Actually they are, but even if they weren't, do you honestly think they wouldn't have been recalled or something?

Are you expecting an email back saying;

Thank you for your query.  After consulting our research department I can confirm that yes, if you have owned one of these all your hair is going to fall out, then your arms will fall off and you will die a terrible terrible death.

Thank you for shopping with Wenger.

Come on now.  ::) :D

If I get THAT email I will stop being a Wenger authorized dealer. My guess is that the caution applies to raw ore only and that processed material is entirely safe.

I'd guess its only compounds of rather than the alloy in use here that are an issue.  Unless perhaps you plan on ingesting or inhaling it :)

No need for hysteria. The Wenger scales are not pure Rubidium. Pure Rubidium is highly reactive to water, violently so, and thus it must be kept in an oil solution for storage.  I think it would have come to Wenger’s notice that people were catching on fire when they got caught in the rain with one of their Porsche knifes in their pockets. That would lend a new meaning to HOT pants. :D

Oh man, did I drop the ball on that one lol.

Ok, from http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/ruthenium

"It is obtained commercially as a byproduct of the refining of nickel sulfide ores mined near Sudbury, Ont., Canada. Ruthenium metal powder is obtained as the final product of a complex chemical process. It is used as a catalyst in hydrogenation, isomerization, nitrogenation, oxidation, and reforming reactions. The metal is used as a hardener in electrical contact alloys and filaments, in jewelry, in pen nibs, and in instrument pivots. It is usually alloyed with other metals. It is a very good hardener for palladium and platinum, and vastly improves the corrosion resistance of titanium when added in small amounts. It is also used in alloys with cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, tungsten, and other metals. Ruthenium compounds are used to color ceramics and glass. "

Sudbury is not far from where I am.  :tu:

I doubt there are any dangers to the handles...but just in case, I am going to wait on Tim's findings before I overly fondle the new knives if and when they come in.

Can some one email wenger and find out if its safe?
I'm on it. Done, will post when I get an answer.
:cry: Well, I got the reply from Wenger and here it is: "Regarding our Porsche design Knives, we confirm that the scales are not in ruthenium. The colour of the scales look like ruthenium but they are made of Zinc and coated with titanium colour. Signed Claude Kottelat, Chief Technical Officer."

Well somebody drop one in sulfuric acid, if there's hydrogen coming out it's zinc.  :P

At least I think that's how it goes, been over ten years since I did it.

:oops: Good Question.
They will probabaly say that "ruthenium" is a description of colour, kind of like "silver", "gunmetal", etc. in the description of alox scales...

Even their actual response is bizarre: "coated with titanium colour". Is there actual titanium in the paint? And if not, and they are using "titanium" as colour descriptions, should they have said "ruthenium colour"?  :ahhh

P.S. I guess I will start calling the grey colour of my "Designed by A.F.Porsche" Lacie external USB harddrive enclosure "ruthenium coulour"...
