SwissTool owner. Should I get a SwissTool spirit?
« on: August 31, 2009, 02:31:11 PM »
Kinda dumb question, I know.  :climber:

But I would like to hear from other owners, who own both, or thought about getting them both.

I really like the Original one, would the spirit be easier to EDC? Also I thought about, if anyone knows, if the "butterknife", though lockable, would still be illegal, or at least less likely to get noticed by a cop, as a weapon?
People seem to really like it.

I had a Swisstool RS and liked it, but it was too big and heavy to EDC on my person.  I would always through it in a bag or the glovebox.  I ended up trading it to someone on here.  I now have a BO Spirit S (without scissors), and its my EDC on most days.  The butter knife can cut through most anything (even seatbelts, makes a dandy rescue blade), and its nice to have the pointy blade.

When the Spirit X came out I thought it would be perfect for me, buts it rare I need scissors and I keep a swisscard in my wallet for just that purpose.  So I find the Spirit S gives me the best of both worlds.  I have a spear point blade for when I need it, the butter knife when I need it.

I say you can't go wrong with any of the Spirits.  I used to be hardcore Leatherman and still own a few of their tools, but the Spirit does everything I need a tool to do.

The Spirit is quite possibly the finest medium sized MT out there :)

The hundreds of happy owners here can attest to that :)

Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Just one caveat. Due to the blinding polish, it is a slippery tool to use.  But then that goes for both Victorinox MTs.

No such thing as the perfect tool.

A little Leatherman information.

I find the BO to be a little less slippery.

and to that! :tu:

I have both and yes the Spirit is much easier to EDC, the ergonomics of the Spirit are good in the hand.
Both have incredible quality and Warranty!

I don't live in a country with such blade laws, but concerning the "Butter Knife" which many of us
have grown to really like, I'd have to guess by it's "harmless" look it shouldn't be a problem but
make sure with your local blade laws to be sure.

Good Luck

The Spirit offers an equal if not slightly better tool selection in a smaller frame IMO. Some would say the Spirit's file and large slothead screw driver are an improvement over the ST's too.

I carried a Swiss Tool for years and compared "EVERY" MT to it and stayed with it until I got a Spirit.

But here is the kicker I carried the Spirit for a couple years and then I noticed that my needs and wants were changing
so I put it aside and starting carrying a Leatherman Kick.

Is the Kick better then a Swiss Tool or a Spirit?

No, I believe that they are the top of the MT food chain,
just right now I just want to carry a Kick really no reason just like it better at this moment.

If you like the Swiss Tool but find it a little BIG sometimes then you might want to try out a Spirit (you can't do wrong with either) :D

And remember if you don't like it I am sure you can find a buyer here.  Shoot I will offer half for it right now ::)

Yes, get a Spirit. I have both and I like the Spirit MUCH better. But then again I very rarely wear a sheath so I want something I can drop in my pocket. The Spirit is big for pocket carry but it's still doable.

Just think of the Spirit as a slightly smaller version of the SwissTool. There are many minor differences between the two tools, but there is no doubt they came from the same family. If you like the SwissTool, you should feel right at home with a Spirit.

The Spirit is definitely easier to EDC, especially if you add a pocket clip. There are 3 tutorials on the this site about how to add pocket clips to the Spirit.  One of the mod screws the clip right into the handle, and the other uses the Clipdraw draw system that FelineVet sells. The Clipdraw is very easy to use.

The butter knife certainly looks more benign than most blades, but I have no idea if that makes it legal.

Perhaps there is some way to disable the lock only on the knife? I have no idea if that is possible though.

Lots of the usual love for the Spirit above, but my findings were different.

I got the Swisstool first like you did and then bought a Spirit.  It wasn't too long before I sold the Spirit as IMO it's just not different enough for me to carry it over it's bigger brother which is heftier and has the ruler which I like having.

I'm back!!

if you have a swiss spirit you don't need a swiss tool. i work in construction and i am constantly amazed at the possibilities the spirit offers. there are other MTs i want to try myself but i can't justify them having carried and used the spirit.
like Zack i recommend the S model. mine is BO also. you'll find that there is no compromise with it.

Although I love my Leatherman tools, I have a soft spot for Vic multitools. I have "bashed" them occasionally but when it comes down to it, they are excellent tools.

Personally I would say get the Spirit. It's a lot easier to carry and some things on it are superior to the regular SwissTools (file, chisel implement, cap lifter/crate opener, plier ergonomics, and all the tools have NO up and down play!

Thanks everyone for the thoughts  :salute:

Damn bladelaws. I would love to carry a locking blade off duty also. Onehanded opening I can live without, as I see how if could upset people.
Although I really use my utillity blade with snap off blades in a onehanded way at work. Just losen it with one hand and flick it out :
