Old Swiss pocketknife ?
on: September 01, 2009, 06:09:14 PM
Hi guys, need some help one this old pocketknife, which to me looks to be Swiss made.
The knife is obviously used and has been sharpened, but it's still in very good usable condition as well as still quite sharp.
I bought it from an elderly gentleman who had it for sale on a Dutch auction site.

The knife sports a spearpoint main blade, a clip-point secondary blade, and a corkscrew.
All items are made from carbon steel, and so are the liners (which show some corrosion).
The handle material looks to be celluloid and a small red shield with a white cross is inlayed flush into it.
Knife is of the riveted construction and it even has a nice brass bail.

Despite it's age, the knife is still very usable with a lot of life left in it.
Both blades still open & close quite snappy.

The maker's mark is the image of a key, imprinted in the main blade, but i'm unfamiliar with this maker.
Does anyone here have an idea about who made this and how old the knife is ?

of the sellers say that Is French.
SURE this is NOT SWISS ( Victorinox )

Thanks to Bernard Levine we have the answer.
The pictured knife was made some years after 1812 in Thiers in France, by a maker called Antoine Fonteix, and it was meant for export to Switzerland.

That means you were headed in the right direction M-Tex,  :salute:

I have one of those as well and I always was under the impression that it was French too.
