Those Wengers
on: September 04, 2009, 05:38:36 AM
I've been having fun with the Wengers.  I just went through the adventure of finding the odd Master variant I got in a bunch of SAKs...  Now, another of those knives just sent me digging...  It's a large SAK, with some odd tools...  I ran through all the usual suspects, Tool Chest/ToolChestPlus, Monarch, Motorist...  None matched...

The closest match I can find is the Matterhorn Plus, if you lose the Ruler/Compass.  Don't know if this is just an older version of that model, or what...  The oldest catalog I can find is 1991, so...

Those Wengers...  An adventure in/of themselves.....    :D

Have a pic ?,   I know what the Matterhorn looks like - basically a Survivor without the scissors.  Is the ruler and compass the only extras on the Plus version?.

Googled Matterhorn Plus and this is what I found.  Wow much more tools than on a regular Matterhorn - I guess they left out the whistle.

Bear in mind that while Wenger naming is difficult to begin with, it's made much more difficult due to the loss of Wenger's own records during a fire in 1986 that destroyed much of their factory.

I am curious if there is any public articles about this fire and the details about it. What do you know Def?

I haven't gotten a pic of the Wenger yet.  I sort of went hog-wild for a bit and grabbed some NTSA consignments (of which the Wenger was part), and I'm still sorting through them.  (A look at my finances put a halt to the consignment grabbing...<deep sigh follows>)

Loss of records and all aside, you still get the feeling that Wenger was much more experimental in their knifemaking.  You do seem to run into more odd variants with them.  Keeps it interesting... :D

+1  :tu:

I hope they keep it up too. It makes SAK collecting a lot more fun!  :D

Even if the "master files" at the Wenger plant were destroyed...aren't there paper catalogues all around the world that were sent to stores/shops for them to order knives?
