Any experence with fiskars folding saw?
on: September 05, 2009, 12:56:08 AM
So has anybody used fiskars' folding/sliding saw? How do they compare to other brands like bahco laplander?

I think Dave (Spork) has one, and I'm pretty sure he rates it :)

It'll have to be good to beat the Laplander though :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I like the Fiskars saw. It is lightweight, cuts well and inexpensive. They are a great value like their hatchets.

I rate the Bahco  higher though. I also have the Silky F100 and Pocketboy, buy have not used them enough to form a real opinion about them.

Thanks. I went to take a look at them, the craftsmanship isn't as good as bahco but it's also a lot cheaper, 15" version for $20 as oppose to $30 for laplander. Hmm, going to think about it a bit more.

...15" version for $20...
Just noticed this...I was talking about the small version. The large version is not readily available in the US...I bought mine from a vendor in Germany.

I like my Fiskars, it´s a great saw. Far superior to those tiny Leatherman or Victorinox Tool saws. I like the Opinel saw and the Spydersaw too, great EDC saws for hiking and trekking.

A wide angle camera probably isn't enough to shoot all your stuff.

Actually that saw turned out to be 10", store flier was wrong.

Well I ended up buying the 10" version. I don't really like how the teeth are very much biased for pull cut (much more so than leatherman's angled teeth, the tip of teeth is ramped to on push they'll just slide over), where as laplander's work either way. I duno, maybe I'll end up return it.

I have a Pocketboy 170 from Silky, and boy is it a nice camp saw! Nice big thick handle of rubber to grab onto and really make the teeth bite, and 2 different locking positions. Nice red colour for keeping track of it in the bush, and a great plastic holster/carrying case with pocket clip. I find it does the work a lot better than the sliding Fiskars saws.

I know this is old, but....  I just bought the 10" Gerber from County Comm for $9.95.

It makes sense to me that it would be biased for a pull cut--for safety.  If it were biased for push cut, the force of cutting would tend to force the blade back into the handle.  It's not my choice for the best way to cut, but it's a limitation of the sliding design.
