RAT H.E.S.T
on: September 06, 2009, 12:39:58 AM
This is a cool little knife that came out a few months ago the RAT Cutlery H.E.S.T...  Anyone own one?  It's a multitool of knives...wire breaker notch, bottle opener, lashing points, storage in the handle, pry bar piece..

http://www.ratcutlery.com/dpxgear.htm

For $100 I think it's too expensive, although it does come with a nice kydex sheath and there's nothing out there like it.  The pry bar at the end of the handle looks like it would be uncomfortable while carrying it in a pocket or anywhere close to you, and might get caught up on stuff when unsheathing it quickly.

I had seen that in he works a while back.  The fact that it is a Rat knife is enough for me to want one.

I quite like that style of knife :tu:

But like you've said, $100 is too much for that sort of design :-\

I've seen those knives but not that grey g10 handle.  That's lovely!

Not G-10..micarta :D

They are designed to unscrew easily so you can store stuff in the hollow area.

I was close to re-buying an RC-4...but I keep hesitating because the H.E.S.T just has the cool factor.

I love RAT knives, and that one is just cool :tu:

But, too rich for my blood, I would be afraid to use that darn thing! :P

I love it!

Though I don't really understand the handle compartment... you'd need another tool to open it, they could have used some kind of push stopper or something...

I don't get the mini-pry bar at the end of the handle. That looks like to much of a rib-tickler for me...ouch

Ressurecting this thread since I've got one on it's way to me :D

You have to use some ingenuity to unscrew the bolts...some people even make a small lanyard and thread a washer onto the end for unscrewing.  Anything can be used really, a coin, paperclip, rock..SAK 8)

I'm thinking of putting some matches inside the handles.

The HEST is great.  I'll take a pic of my carry setup later tonight and post it.  It's a lot of blade in a small package.  It's similar to the RAT3 in length, but is thicker (as thick as the larger RC4 and 6).

Here's my setup..back right pocket carry with the belt loop over my belt.

It also works using paracord lashed through the sheath directly on the belt.

Congrats on the HEST!

I think it's a great knife.  I carry mine every day attached to my work bag.

Here's a pic of when I first got it.

Like Anthony said, it's almost the same size as the RC3, which I think is a great size for EDC.  Not much you can't do with this knife.

Plus, I think it looks cool!

Did you put anything in the handle?

In mine I have a tiny firesteel, some strike anywhere matches and I think two-three British lifeboat matches with small striker strip all wrapped in plastic.

I put a peice of that compressed cotton tinder in there also, I forgot :P

Just this afternoon I used the pry bar on the HEST to pry up some clips that hold my headlights on.  I had to change the bulbs.
