OMG.  You would think knives are deadlier then guns.

I have a related story of sorts. Tenuous at best, but it will make a point.

I was at the local Postal Outlet sending off a package to someone. When the lady behind the counter asked me what the package was, I informed her it was a pocket knife. She asked me if I wanted to call it something else. I told her no, as that would be lying. The then checked on her banned list to see if I was even allowed to send it off to the US. I told her there is no legality issues about sending a pocket knife to the US and that she should get herself informed quick. She told me that knives are dangerous. I responded that no, knives are not dangerous, murderers wielding knives are dangerous. I paid the shipping and she handled the package like it had a bomb in it.

So is it any small wonder what is happening to the UK Scouts when in Canada, you get this nonsense....a nation that was built upon the foundation of work knives.

Frankly the Daily Mail has some cheek writing this article, they've been at the absolute forefront of the anti-knife movement in the media.  If it wasn't for them, and those like them, there wouldn't be such strong anti-knife feeling in the first place.

I don’t know what you are complaining about. When WW 3 brakes out and humanity is on the verge of extinction after a long war, we will be the only survivors under the lead of President Ray Mears and VP Les Stroud, the thru masters of bush craft, while Bear Grylls is the royal jester and is given dead monkey butt for dinner. Why is this the most likely outcome? WE CARRY KNIVES AND MT, and sort of know how to use them.

That is just sad. When i was in Scouts we had to pass a test to make sure we had the proper skills in order to tote a sharp ax/knife/saw.


Boy Scout Requirements (33215)
This certification grants a Scout the right to carry and use woods tools. The Scout must show his Scout leader, or someone designated by his leader, that he understands his responsibility to do the following:

1.Read and understand woods tools use and safety rules from the Boy Scout Handbook.
2.Demonstrate proper handling, care, and use of the pocket knife, ax, and saw.
3.Use the knife, ax, and saw as tools, not playthings.
4.Respect all safety rules to protect others.
5.Respect property. Cut living and dead trees only with permission and with good reason.
6.Subscribe to the Outdoor Code.
The Scout's "Totin' Rights" can be taken from him if he fails in his responsibility.

When I was 10 my mother gave me this knife


 Blade is 21 cm/8.2 inch long. One of the older boy scouts had a knife with a 14 inch blade.

I guess we're now teaching our kids, don't be prepared and, well, just fake it...

It seems to me that being prepared these days means that you have several credit cards, a list of local hotels and a lawyer on speed dial.  Frankly, I can't wait for this current society to crumble and a more realistic one takes it's place.

That is just sad. When i was in Scouts we had to pass a test to make sure we had the proper skills in order to tote a sharp ax/knife/saw.

That was why I didn't join the scouts. I was about 8-9 or so and I wanted to but I found out they wouldn't let me carry my knife until I passed their test. Even back then I had an independent steak. I figured if my parents trusted me carrying a knife then I could carry one, I refused to be "de-knifed" by some grown man wearing a goofy looking uniform.

You know, that's still my attitude today.

In all honesty, this "Nanny State" thing is annoying, but it isn't uniquely British. I've moved abroad a couple of times, and I always come back. Wherever you go something's going to piss you off, and on balance, it ain't so bad here - especially if you only follow the laws that you agree with
