I was all set to purchase the ST 300,But after reading thru this thread, i'm not so sure.

Is it one to get or look at something else?

I've decided to go the CHARGE ALX.

Has anyone else noticed how good the wire cutters are?? Mine are sharp enough and tight enough to act as scissors :o They cut (not tear) through light card stock like butter.

Well I got mine, and besides the cosmetic "grinding" marks on the pliers it suffers from none of the above, so that's cool.

Actually the grind marks are cool, as they are consistent on each side, and look almost like a grain.

Full feedback & thoughts later, but so far, this is EXACTLY what I was hoping the ST300 would be. My Core will be retiring now as a worthy successor has been found!

I'm off to the woods later and may well cut some stuff up :D

Glad it made it there ok!!! Hope the other little "tool" made it there ok as well! Oddly enough the Sideclip made it here today as well. Needless to say, I'm quite happy!

I was worried you would say that.  Looks like I may have a stray package as well as one being held by customs this week.  ::)

Ah - I forgot about the other bit - I need to investigate that still!

The last package I got (from eleatherman.com) took 3 weeks - it's probably just customs, whether airport it landed at is affected by the postal strike etc.

How long have you been waiting Ben?
I used to come here a lot.

The Surge has a pretty good pair of scissors already, so i didn't see the need to double up. I just need to find an ALX at a decent price now.

I have the ALX and I quite like it.  I bought it over the AL because with a plain edge blade and a serrated with
a guthook who need scissors?  I felt I would rather have the extra bit driver.  :)

take care,

Sean

WOOHOO!!   :tu:

Looks like somebody at Leatheman was thinking ahead.  Can it really mean a new 4.5 inch tool with outside blades is in the pipeline?  Holy cow, I better start saving my pennies.

I have a question for you ST300 owners: when the tool is fully opened how far apart are the handles?  The reason I ask is that I always felt the gap on the Core was far to wide.  I picture of my own might help to explain what I'm asking for.

That's an original Supertool and a Blast.  Now my Blast gets very little use as a pair of pliers because I find the thickness of the handles, plus the overly wide gap (for me at least), makes for a tool that isn't very comfy to use.

Not owning a Core it's hard to remember but I think I had a similar issue with it.  So my slightly rambling question boils down to; is the gap more like that of the ST/ST200, or is it wider like that of the Core?

It's too late at night to take a picture for you, no natural light, but I did measure the Core and the ST 300.  I actually just bought an Original Super Tool but won't get it for a couple days.  I measured from the center top of each handle end when open.  The Core is approximately 42/43mm wide.  The ST 300 is approximately 40mm wide.  So they are pretty close to the same width when open.  I will take a picture for you tomorrow when I can take a picture and not have the flash from my camera bleach the tools out.

Thanks guys, that really helps.  I just measured my Supertool (centre of pin to centre of pin) and it comes out as roughly 30mm only. This might be somewhat closer than normal however, as the jaw tips on my Supertool are (accidentally  :-[) a little shorter than normal and so might be letting the handles close up more.  Even so I don't think that a normal Supertool would be more than 35mm.

Going by 1Jump's measure the ST300 is 40mm and the Core is 43mm.  The Blast in my picture is a whopping 46mm. :o

For me this really makes a difference in just how comfortable a tool is to use for any length of time.  Obviously that's a personal thing and, as ever, YMMV.

Anyone fancy measuring a ST200 for me? ;)

thanks to Zack the man, add me to the club! This thing is a beast, I thought my surge was heavy duty, mine opens pretty easy for a new tool,no grind marks either, I like it alot.
