Personally, I wouldn't accept that tool as new. It may not have been used as such, but you're going to find that rust difficult to shift due to the uneven surface on the cast steel.

Where did you get it from?
I used to come here a lot.

Amici,
Well I picked this baby up from a vendor on Ebay with the understanding that it was brand spanking new.. I am starting to have my doubts though.... Well, I'll try the WD40 routine and see what happens, if not I'll be sending LM an email informing them that I have just purchased one of their tools supposedly brandy new but covered in goo..

Cheers,
Serge

I know that my LM's all have a little rust on them, but if they came brand new they are clean for at least a while.  I would question that as well.

Amici,
Well after a little Flitz applied with a cotton ball plus repeated polishing and a little WD40, I was able to remove the goo that was on my ST 300 pliers. For your review I have posted pics of it along with it's new sheath..

The ultimate test is when I go Hiking this weekend when I tend to evaluate the Surge and the 300. I will post pics and a review in a new thread when this is done.

So far after handling both, I'm starting to lean towards the Surge again, ratle and all but we'll see..

Cheers,
Serge

Amici,
Some quick observations I have with the ST300 after using it for EDC for a few days and no it isn't the weight.

What I am speaking of is when I have the main blade deployed and I'm using the tool for cutting purposes.

What I notice is that it tends to feel how can I say, "hollow" when used as a knife, I tend to think this is because of it's non liner lock construction so similar to the old PST which seems like a 100 years ago since LM changed to the liner lock design.

Also my hand tends to squeeze the locking system so it constantly clicks from the locks being continuously pressed open and closed.

The blades are a little sticky to deploy but it's still new and I also seem to notice a little bit of a wobble again when using it as a knife in the closed position.

At this point, it looks like the Surge is still the favorite..

Cheers,
Serge

Amici,
Now that I take into consideration all the problems I've been encountering with my Surge as of late, consider me now a "born again" 300 disciple..

Hey Jim Guy,
That's a Maxpedition 5" nylon sheath... For comfortable civilian or military carry of any full sized MT, this is the way too go.. I did a review of it in the "sheaths" forum from my experience of carrying the Swisstool for several hours hiking and no broken back or bruised hip..

Cheers,
Serge

I received a new Leatherman Super Tool 300 and deluxe sheath today.  The date codes on the handles are 0510 (May 2010) and 0610 (June 2010) so this ST 300 is recent vintage.

Reports from early adopters about how difficult the knives and other blades were to deploy are disturbing.  I am pleased to say that the individual blades on my ST 300 move easily for a brand new tool.  The only exception is that one side of the pliers head is difficult to close due to the ramp/handle contact.

I applied a light coat of 3-in-One oil to the entire tool as I do with my other multitools.

The ST 300 is heavier than my original Super Tool but lighter weight than the Surge.  So far, I prefer the ST 300 over the Surge which is too large for my hands.

The deluxe sheath holds the tool farther away from the body, so I will probably use a more "hip hugging" sheath for belt carry.  The closer a tool is held to a body, the lighter it feels.

I'm way too lazy to go upstairs and get my camera, so no pics yet, but I've had my ST300 for about 2 weeks now. It's a great, great tool. It replaced a SOG PowerLock and I could not be happier about that choice.
