Another odd thing I noticed about ST300 Vs. the Core(they are almost identical) is the ST300 side with 2 flatheads and awl - the thumb studs are all even, but on the Core they vary in length and are easier to get out, seems like a poor design downgrade imo.

That has to do with the ST300 tool clumping feature. On the Core the tools could come out individually, so the staggered nail nicks were standard, a feature not necessary on the ST300.

One note though, the last run of Core's and any that have been factory refurbished lately will have the ST300 implements. Not a big deal, but it does defeat the "one tool at a time" feature.

I kinda disagree, the offset nailnicks would still make it easier to chose the tool u want and put the others away faster even witht he clumping, I think they dropped the ball on this aspect, but overall I'm pretty happy with the tool especially since it cost $37  >:D

Good point, but the redesign of the ST300 was done with the goal of having all of the tools come out at once, and then being able to flick through them with your thumb. Having the nicks all in line does give a nice wide area to grab the tools.

Never underestimate the power of the fleece

Well I also don't agree with Joe Leatherman there...If you have both tools, do a side by side test, you can deploy the core tools 5x faster and easier than the supertool, so I say leave the clumping to SOG. maybe they designed it for ogres or the giants in the nba or better yet to save $.

Perhaps a bit of thread necromancy is in order? I felt asking this question fit better here than a new thread. My ST300's pivot has the distinct problem of being functionally loose, until I squeeze the handles really tight, then the head is tight to the point the handles almost want to close, until I open it and close it fully a couple times, and it returns to normal. Any ideas?

Is this a new problem or was it that way since you got it? Maybe the screw isn't sitting right?

In any case, I just wanted to use this smiley. :D

The screw? As in, the pivot? The problem developed once I worked the tightness out around day 3 of ownership back in May.

Also, :D

It is my main hard use multitool. I only wish it had a diamond file on it.. As far as I know the 2012 model is still the same.

They are made in the US but as some parts may be made oustide the US legally LM is not allowed to put USA on them.

Yeah i am still here. Have not bought any GAK's for 12months or more. Its just a never ending addiction that i had to ease up on.

The ST300 seems pretty good. I probably would not bother with any other smaller ones at this stage apart from the squirt, juice and Minis which i have an like.

Cant really pick any faults with the 300. Yeah the handles flex when squeezing hard but i thought that was normal. Plier tips line up 99% perfect. I like the look of theplier head on this one. Would have been nice to have USA or Portland OR on the handles like the old LM's. Just says Leatherman tool so you never actually really know where they are made.

I spoke too soon .One thing I did notice on the 300, on ethe edge of the file, is that ment to be a metal saw? The teeth on mine are pretty poor, uneven and to be honest it looks like they are worn down already? No where near anything like the teeth on my KF4’s. This should not have got past QC surely?

Edit - i looked at the website and it does not mention a 'metal saw' so i guess i am ok then?

I have never owned a newer Leatherman that had a "Metal saw" worth a damn.  The teeth on all mine have been less than ideal, so I'd say it's normal.

If you want a metal saw, get a Vic Spirit!

How about a Leatherman Surge, then add a T-shank bi-metal jigsaw blade? I think this would trump ANYTHING currently available on an MT, as far as a metal saw goes. ;) You may have to trim off the very end of the jigsaw blade with a dremel, so it folds into the right place.

FWIW guys, I just got a Surge a couple days ago. Thought hard about the ST300 and its wonderful pliers/cutters. But two things killed it for me: a) complete lack of scissors, and b) no outside accessible tools.  You know how it goes though; I may get one some day anyhow, hehehe.

I think, by ordering one, you already joined the club  ;).

By the way, we do expect pics once you have it in your hands ...  :pok:.

I just checked and indeed, the "metal saw" on the ST300 is a joke, while the one on the Vic Spirit is a piece of art ...

Never noticed this before  :-[.

P.S. The one on my BO ST300 is a bit better (or should I say, less worse  ::)).

I was not impressed with the file/saw of my ST300.

I wish they had out a diamond file there..

Maybe they assumed the "working man" wanted a classic file.

Oh come on Jeremy!...  Like you're not going to also have at least one SAK on you as well?   :pok:

My ST300 lives in the glove box of my wife's Sienna... it was invaluable over the holidays when we were up in the Sierras... I had to install/remove the chains at least half a dozen times that week, and I'm certain it saved my fingers (even with gloves on) no end of cuts and scrapes!

Rec'd my Super Tool 300 today - what a tank! I have an original Super Tool and a Super Tool 200 and love them, but this thing is awesome. Looks like they examined all the broken tools they warrantied and used what they learned to make the 300. Just ordered an xl molle sheath and removeable bit driver to go with it. Don't know why I waited so long to get one. Thanks for all the input you guys have posted, I read a lot of it before I pulled the trigger and I couldn't be happier.

I have a BO ST300 with the molle sheath and bit accessories.  I keep it in the glove box of my wife's mini-van.  It's a great tool.  Back in January, we did a week long trip up in the Sierras to go sledding with the kids, and so I could do some hiking, and my wife could do some XC skiing.  It was invaluable for installing/removing snow-chains.  Every time I see one of those guys on the side of the highway offering to instal/remove snow chains, it reminds me of how much money I'm saving by having invested in the ST300.   :tu:
