A long knife story
on: September 12, 2009, 04:27:52 AM
Mom and I were out cleaning in the old homeplace, when I saw her pick up what looked like a shipping envelope off one of the old tables.  She turned to me and said, "Look at this."  It looked like a knife box inside.  However, I was busy in another room, so I just sat it aside and went on working.  Later on, I found another envelope that had a couple little knife boxes, apparently some sort of promotional gift from Copenhagen Snuff.  I didn't look at the knives, figuring they were cheap-o's.  I did bring all of this stuff home with me to look over later.

Later, when I got home, I pulled out the boxes, and got a shock.  The box Mom had found was labelled "W.R. Case & Sons".  It was a beautiful little medium Stockman with the blue bone handles.  I don't even think the box had been opened before.  The Copenhagen knives were both Schrades, little single-blade models, both marked "Made in the USA."  They'd never been out of the box, either.

I don't know when my uncle got these, nor why.  He had a tendency, particularly in later years, to just buy stuff, nicknacks, etc, and then squirrel stuff away.  I don't know...

While I was sitting here, looking up stuff on the Case, I remembered my uncle giving me a box of old pocket knives way back when.  I'd forgotten about it.  So, I dug around under my desk, and found the box...  It was an ancient Boker box, but it was filled with odd knives.  I remember when he'd given it to me, I hadn't really paid much attention.  Now, digging through the box...  I found a large Camillus bone-handled camp knife, a Camillus Stockman style, an Imperial camp knife, a "pearl-handled" Hammer knife, and an ivory handled Boker...

They need cleaning, but...  Wow...  I kinda feel like my uncle was leaving me a little something.  Or maybe all of my uncles were.  (There were 5 boys in the family, and they were all farmers/hunters/outdoorsmen...)

It's been an interesting day...   :D

That Case may be worth a pretty penny.

Hang on to those knives. Even though I don't really have any shelf queens if I inherited some Case knives they'd be my 1st. Nice haul.
