The tora website has everything out of stock, how would you go about getting one of these (British Service Issue Pattern Two), or are they no longer available?

The best thing to do would be just to email Simon and ask for updates, as they seem to be struggling to keep stock in atm

I emailed from the website ('contact us' link), I am not sure if that goes directly to the person in question or not.

Anyone who has used these kukris, and the cold steel kukri machete (cheap one), can you tell us what differences you have found between the two? I was watching a video comparison on youtube, one of the main differences is the width of the spine, which is quite thick in a traditional kukri, but in the cold steel one it is 2.75mm (i.e. quite thin). So the reviewer was saying that will make it much harder to chop with the cold steel compared to the traditional design.

But having seen the knifetests video where he chops through 2x4 planks with the cold steel, it doesnt seem to do too badly. It must help it being much lighter, and the length of the blade and its curvature must help it get quite a bite.

I've only got the Carbon V Gurkha Kukri, and even though it's 8mm thick it cut's a shears just fine 8) Only my axe's can out chop it :D

I've also got a pattern II kukri, and once I'd re-profiled it (it's about 12mm thick!), it cuts just fine :)

The secret to using a kukri is being able to consistently use draw cut's, as that's where the real shearing advantage, that you only get with a kuk really comes in :)

How are you getting on with the ole girl Dan?

Your email will get to Simon  :tu: Here is a link to a video review Simon does on the BSI II  :salute:
http://www.torabladesforum.co.uk/tora-bsi-pattern-two_topic762.html

More vids here http://www.torabladesforum.co.uk/tora-kukri-videos_forum20.html

And here's a really interesting article about the Ghurka's and their infamous Kurki  :D
http://www.torabladesforum.co.uk/the-gurkha-and-the-khukuri-kukri_topic1030.html

Getting on great with her Mike  My wife stills thinks there is something seriously wrong with me though  ::) I started on this crazy ride just over a year ago with a Leatherman Squirt, now I'm buying huge zombie slayers  :ahhh :ahhh I love it  :D

The thing I like about the traditional Kukri is that is hand made is Nepal from truck springs and it's totally bombproof. I suppose the downside to that is the waiting period because they're not cranked out of a production line  :-\

Hmm.

A lot of knives tested in knifetests, whatever you may think of his methods, claim this. And most dont survive all of the tests. Now you may argue that knives dont need to survive those kind of experiences, but these are knives for which claims are made they are the toughest of the tough, 'bombproof' and they are priced accordingly, e.g. the Ranger RD7 cost the tester around the same as the scrapyard scrapper 6 (he said just over $100), but in testing they were quite different, the scrapyard scrapper took everything thrown at it, the Ranger broke relatively early on in the tests. [And even though some of the stuff he does seems extreme, some has real life parallels, if you miss your target with a knife and hit the wall or a stone by accident, his beating on concrete or cement gives you an idea of what will happen to the edge of the knife; if you use your knife as a prybar, his standing on the handle gives you an idea of how much force the knife could pry; if you use the tip as an awl, his stabbing wood, cement and a metal sheet give you an idea of how strong the tip is.]

Now that doesnt necessarily apply to these kukhris because they are not priced exorbitantly, in fact, for hand made items of such beauty and tradition they are exceptionally cheap. But it is the assumption of their toughness which I am wondering about.

The cold steel kukri machete is ugly. The handle is horrible from what I have read. The spine is 2.75mm and so relatively thin for a kukri. However it managed to pass every test knifetests threw at it, it is pretty much indestructible. Its edge retention is poor, but it can be easily sharpened.

I am just wondering how that compares to this kukri, apart from its beauty and aesthetics, what advantage does this give over the cold steel one? I am hoping someone here has used both. I would assume because of the greater heft of the blade and it being made from a different metal it would chop better and hold its edge for longer? But I don't think we can assume it is 'tougher' because it contains more metal.

The Cold steel effort should chop more efficiently because being thinner there's a lot less wedging. I doubt it's as strong as the Pattern II though, especially laterally.

Depends if you need to pry or not. The cold steel can bend at over 90 degrees with no obvious damage, will bend back and keep on going. So it won't work to pry something since it will bend, but at the same time it won't break or snap.

LOTS apparently! :o

I paid £250 for my Carbon V version several years ago, I'm far from made of money, but I considered it the last knife I'd ever need to buy :)

I fully expect my great, great grandchild to inherit this bad boy :)

You might be able to get a good used one from across the water though :)

Thats the most expensive one, I thought the one you were referring to was this one:

http://www.coldsteel-uk.com/store/Gurkha-Kukri.html

Which is £235.

Does Cold Steel sell their products at the cheapest market price, or can you get them for more reasonable amounts with other retailers?

I've seen CS dealer price sheet, even the wholesale price is expensive, more than I'd pay really.

Mine was Carbon V, so you had decent corrosion resistance from the steel, SK5 isn't as good a steel (though plenty tough enough!) so you'd have to look after it. Having said that I wouldn't hesitate to get one :)

As for prices, the days of getting one from the states at half price are well and truly over now sadly, and that's without the near inevitable import tax ect :-\

You could email Heinnie and ask them to get one, and I'm sure you'd save a few quid (though not much) :tu:

Unfortunately £200+ is beyond my budget for a knife, even one as nice as this.

What I was amazed at was the kukri machete, and its ability to perform as such a budget price, which has drawn me to it. Large blade, relatively light and thin, can sharpen it to put a good edge on, and its shape gives it a good biting edge, and its near indestructible. All for £25. I'm just trying to figure out that apart from the handle, does it have any other issues I should be aware of before getting one.

Do bear in mind that the knifetests are about as scientific as my wifes cooking.  Use with a pinch of salt mate, do not base your whole choice on a random guy that likes to hack stuff up.

One of the advantages of it being so cheap, if it turns out crap no big loss.

Having said that reviews for it are universally outstanding with regards to its price and toughness. So I'm hoping I won't be disappointed.
