New Item: Leatherman Bit Extender
on: May 12, 2007, 03:33:50 PM

I see Leatherman has made their Bit Extender into a regular catalog item HERE. They did a prototype run of these last fall, and we were told that it would soon be available for sale. Looks like our info was correct.

By the way, scroll down to the bottom of that Leatherman page. Have they always had "Canadian Replacement Bits" listed, or is that a new item also?

Hi Bob,

I believe the Canadian bit kits have been around for some time.

Glad to see the extender made it.  Have to get a couple more to go with tools left in the car, etc.

Best - Joe

oh yes, this is brilliant.

Now just need to find a way to get it dirt cheap... >:D

Edit: I'm quite impressed, LM sell it for $12, for some reason I thought it'd be more expensive.

"Holds standard Leatherman bits and standard hex bits"

How does it do this? And does it do this well? At the LM bits securely held by it or do they rattle?

The Extender has a full hexagon hole in the end, so both regular 1/4" hex bits and flattened Leatherman bits fit into it. On mine, the flattened bits are kind of wobbly. They fit, they work, but they are not as snug as I'd prefer.

That being said, there doesn't seem to be any danger of the bit falling out of the Extender. It does not use a magnet, but instead a circular steel spring that grabs hold of the lttle "dimples" on the hex bit when it is installed.

The Charge models I have each came with 1 or 2 bits in the tool, and 6 more bits in the kit carrier. Some of them look to be the same bits as those shown in your picture Inky. Others I'm seeing though, like the double ended Phillips drivers, double ended flatheads, and double ended Torx bits, are not included with the Charge package that I have.

Hey! I just noticed the tiny eyeglass screwdriver bit in the bit kit on the right! I didn't even know the bit carrier had a space for the tiny screwdriver.

I am gonna have to get me one of them....  I could have used it yesterday when taking the door off my fridge.

Pssst...hey buddy, a little free advice here....fridges without doors are faster to get into, but they don't keep the beer as cold.

Yeah...  problem was, I have a small fridge with plastic shelves and two of them cracked.  For the last year I have been using only one shelf which made for a very cramped fridge.  well I finally got around to gluing some patches over the cracks, but I couldn't get them back into the fridge since the door won't open up all the way, thanks to a large pipe going through the kitchen.  Sometimes living in a 120+ year old house is a huge pain in the arse!

Anyways, in order to put the shelves back into the fridge (they came out fine when they were split in half!) I had to take the door off.  In order to take the fridge door off, I had to take off the freezer door first.  In my next house I swear I am going to build a walk in fridge and freezer so that I don't have to deal with this crap anymore!

I see Tyler Tool has the 42 extra bits on sale for only $13.00 HERE.

(I still don't know whether they are all different than the original set though.  ???)

I ordered one of these for a fellow MTOrg member....I hope they didn't run out of them before it shipped.

Dunno.
I've gotten no email or other delay notice from them, just an order receipt. Hopefully the bit extender will still arrive in the next couple days.

weird that leatherman has not contacted you either, have you tried sending them a message finding out what's going on? I normally find that they respond quite quickly (although my last email was sent about a month ago now with no reply, maybe it got lost somewhere).

I'll check the mail when I get home tonight. If nothing still, then I'll send them an email. Maybe the package is just behind schedule, but the fact that the Bit Extender is no longer listed on their website gives me reason for concern.

I do find it very poor service from LM to first put it up on their website when they did not have it for sale, and then say they will have it for sale from a certain date, and have taken it down from their website by then, and to not even send out an email to customers who have ordered one telling them what is going on  >:(

I'll admit that it's frustrating, but I don't think that they really had much choice in the matter.  I don't think any tool from any manufacturer has ever been introduced on time or without it's share of problems.

As far as some manufacturers go, Leatherman isn't too bad, so probably just best to bear with them.

Yah I am still deciding if this is what I want to go with. For $5 I can go to Lowes and get a dewalt extender and grind it down. I know that the magnetic tip on those are super strong.
