I'm still cleaning out the old homeplace, and my uncle still keeps leaving surprises for me. I was looking at some stuff we'd thrown in a bag and brought back home, and there were two lockback knives, identical models. When I'd first saw them, I just figured them for those generic Chinese knives. Like the one's you always see at the flea markets, right next to cheesy pocket watches in the ill-fitting velvet-looking cases, with the guy standing there telling you what a great deal you're getting... "Yep, yep...I guarantee it!"
I thought that, till I pulled the knives out and looked them over. Both made in US Schrade Uncle Henry's. I think they're the "Smokey" model, though I'm not really familiar with Schrades. One's obviously been carried, used, and sharpened. The other is in fairly good condition, other than being a bit dirty. I've cleaned the "used" one up a bit, and probably will throw it in my pocket the next time I go back out on the farm... (For some reason, I'm thinking of pairing it up with my GAK...)
The other night I was talking to Mom about finding the knives and about my uncle, and she offhandedly said, "You didn't see the one he was carrying, did you?" No, I hadn't. But then I hadn't been too dilligent about going through his personal things, just a bit too painful at the time... She went and got it. A nice little medium stockman model with brown handles, very well worn and dinged up. I thought it was a Case, and knew then why he'd bought the blue bone Stockman we'd found the other day... However, I got to looking, and realized that the medallion on the side definitely wasn't a Case style. Opened it, to find it was a Schrade, too.
I seem to be inadvertently getting a small collection of American knives going here... Not the best way to get them, mind you. I think I'd trade all the knives to get my Dad and my uncles back. But, maybe this is a small way to remember them...
