Question for Dunc
on: September 25, 2009, 11:18:34 PM
Dunc, while you were absent from MTO, a question came up about cutting rope that had been soaked in salt water, then left to dry out.  Someone rolled the edge of their knife while cutting such a rope.

It was theorized that crystalized salt left behind in the rope after the water evaporated might make it harder to cut.

In your experience, does having been soaked in salt water make rope noticeably harder to cut?

I'm on it guys  :D

Answer is yes but in my experience it has to be bone dry .Salt is evil stuff and if left unchecked it can really mess up your kit .
I have problems with it getting behind the dials on VHF radios .Although the radios are waterproof the salt builds up behind the volume and squelch knobs and they become almost impossible to turn .

What was the blade that was rolled , was it plain edge or serrated ? Also what was the rope ? That hard blue nylon rope isn't very kind on blades and most of mine have horizontal scratches on the blades from such rope .

Great post and I must admit it wasn't something I had really thought about until you mentioned it  :tu: But I'd like to look into it more , I may even do a little experiment  :D
