Sending out my PowerAssist
on: September 28, 2009, 04:01:07 PM
While visiting my parents last week I realized that my father isn't getting any younger.  Sure he's in better shape now than when he was in the military, but age is creeping up on him and he's suffering from arthritis in his hands.  Remembering Jock's father had this problem some time ago made me immediately think that the PowerLock was the way to go- after all, it's what Jock gave his father, and it seemed to go over well there.  Plus, I have a few PowerLocks, so I wouldn't really miss one going out of the stable.

On the way home I started to think about it and I realized that there's more to not being able to use your thumbs so well than just handling pliers, and so my father has become a bigger fan of fixed blades these days, and loved the Gerber Rover Shorty I gave him.  I'd been after that knife for a while, as some of you may remember, and was excited when I got it, but decided he would appreciate it more than I would and I can always get another!

Plus, all my PowerLocks have standard leather sheaths, and Dad wears mostly gym pants around these days, as he mostly works around the yard, works on the boats, goes out in the boats or on the ATV's... nothing worth dressing up for, and might as well be comfortable!  So, a clip would serve him better than a belt loop.  My PowerLock has a nylon sheath with a clip, compound leverage, and assisted opening blades- perfect!

So, I'll be packaging off the PowerAssist and sending it off to him soon.  He's amassing a nice collection these days- he has a SwissTech Utili-Key on his keyring, a Spirit Plus, a Tough Tool, a PowerAssist (coming) and a LM Vista for hunting.  There's a funny story about the Vista, but I'll post that later, in the LM forum when I have the pictures to go along with it!  :D

That's a nice, thoughtful idea, Def.  Your dad will love the PowerAssist. :tu:

(Interesting... my dad loves wearing gym sweatpants too...)

I doubt my father's type of review could be reprinted on a family oriented forum!  :D

Dad's new favorite saying is "It's Canada, suck it up!"  This has replaced his musings about the exploits of "The Slap Fairy."

Well I finally sent it out to him today.  As soon as I got home I called and told him to be VERY careful with it, as I don't think he has any experience with assisted opening knives, and I know he has no experience with assisted opening multitools!

He does however have lots of experience with stitches though, for what that's worth!  :D

Did you tell him how to work all the safety and lock switches? Took me a while to figure out which direction to pull which.  :D

I will let him know when he gets it.  I got it second (or third!) hand so I don't have the instructions to send him with it, but he's a smart guy and I am certain can figure it out now that he knows what to expect.
