Watch this, I know some people think old cars are safer but I disagree.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Thats funny that they used a 59 model, those cars had x frames, those are the weakest frames chevy built. I would like to see a repeat with a 65 full size chevy. That was their first full perimeter frame car, much stronger.

 :o

They did a similar test on the British TV program 5th Gear using a modern small car and a big early nineties Volvo estate. The small modern car came off much better.

Prone to daydreaming.

If you think about it, the result was decided before the collision even took place. In the first video like mentioned they chose the weakest to represent the old cars, while in second video they chose a new car that has a inherently stronger shape (i.e. smart 42, much more crush resistant than you would think).

Im not disagreing , but Ive done body work for years and the older cars did have much thicker sheet metal and frames. People got hurt more often in old cars because of lack of safety equipment. Seat belts were an option back then and most didnt get them. The glass they had also shattered and caused more injuries. Air bags are great when they work, I crashed an 08 dodge ram last month, head on 45 mph, air bags did not deploy. It totaled my truck and I got hurt pretty bad.

I had this discussion earlier today. The cars of today are designed and built around safety. The cockpit is more like a cocoon for the occupants. Ive seen some pretty crazy test these cars go thru and I am extremely impressed with the thought, technology and pure science behind them.

We build seats with the airbags inside them and there are very strict regulations we have to follow in order to ensure they do not fail. We deal in milliseconds when it comes to an airbag deploying. The passenger seats have sensors thru out to detect the occupants weight for airbag deployment along with position sensors on the drivers seat to detect how close they are to the steering wheel so it can tell the computer how fast and with how much force it should deploy the airbag.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg
