JDR-Atwood comparison
on: October 16, 2009, 10:50:00 PM
First off:  Gadget Guy is right.  JDR tools are at least equivalent to Atwoods in finish and form.

Here is a comparison of JDR's Ti Pyrhana,   -- JDR's mini Makemake in Damascus --      Atwood's Chigger and Atwood's Atwrench

Sizewise, JDR's tools are about the size of the Chigger.  The Atwrench is significantly longer, with similar tools as the Chigger (Alligator wrench added). Neither the Pyrhana nor the mini Makemake have wrench functions.

All 3 steel tools are of nearly identical thickness. The Ti Pyrhana is a little thicker.

Individually, here's the Pyrhana.  Look at the finish of this.  The chamfered edge in the drilled hole is beautiful.  The prying bits have a clean, even finish. And quite frankly, the bottle cap lifter is the BEST I've ever used.  Ever.  (GG is right, again!)

The mini Makemake is made of  "razorwire" Damascus steel. Great tactile sense to the material and again, beautiful finish.  It has a beefier pry end than the Pyrhana but the same amazing cap lifter.

Here is my Atwood Chigger. S30V steel with stone wash finish.  It has the classic Atwood level of finish to it. Beautiful and functional.  The bottle opener works pretty well.  It could use more leverage, but gets the job done.  The 3/4 in hex fits beautifully, but I'm not sure I could get much leverage on it to turn a set nut.

Finally the Atwood Atwrench.  This is the real deal.  S30V steel, stonewash finish.  This is a workhorse.  With it's length, it's fairly easy to generate significant torque on the clean, even prying end.  At the other end is Peter's really tight tolerance Alligator wrench.  This is my favorite feature on Atwood tools.  The fit is as tight as any Snap On wrench I own.  Again, the length allows real levels of torque.  Finally, the bottle opener works better in this form than the Chigger, mostly because there's better...wait for it...torque and leverage.  One of my favorite Atwood tools.

For those of you with Atwood fever, you have got to get your hands on a JDR tool.  You will be impressed and may even develop JDReritis.

I must admit it, as much as I like Atwoods I think the one JDR piece I have is my favourite of all "one piecer's".

and for the money, they can not be beat.

Also, he is a GREAT guy to deal with  :salute:

That's the truth of it really. They are the sort of thing that you quickly start wondering how you ever got by without them.

I have RA and bite my nails, so I would frequently be using coins and all sorts for opening drink cans, putting keys on key rings and all sorts of everyday things. Now I've come to depend on my Atwood, and more recently the Ring-tool. I seriously worry about leaving them at home - which I haven't yet!
I used to come here a lot.

I haven't been bitten hard enough to actually purchase something yet, but the one piece tool thing is growing rather steadily on me. All of the above look excellent, and without any discernible quality different.

The one thing I probably would like is an Atwrench or similar. The trouble is, I would want a metric one and preferably a leftie... I think they're unobtanium! The recent metric ones sold out in about 17 seconds anyway, so I'd settle for something like a McFeely wrench and try to mod the end of it in to a pry bar like I've seen somewhere. That would actually be my ideal tool :)

I don't see all the fuss about multi-tools, knives, guns, stamp collecting, cars, etc...  ::)

I didn't mean to offend any one by that comment, it was more of a "convince me why these are good so I have an excuse to buy more shinies" than a "you are an idiot for buying such rubbish"
