What do you suggest they put there instead? I suspect it's fairly easy to put in compared to the other options, and in its form factor tools on the key chain usually target those who would drink...

And I imagine they love testing it out. ;D

I'm not sure what you'd put there in it's stead, just that a bottle opener's pretty useless to me :-\

Now a can opener in the vic vein however...

Works for me :tu:

Then wouldn't the edge need to be specially ground or filed to taper down? Sounds like work to me. Wouldn't mind it being there though. :D

That is the age old question. What do you put on a pocket tool that wont jab you when you carry it? A bottle opener always works. Some other makers designs are really great, but try carrying them in your pocket, OUCH!!  :D

I mentioned this in my review of the Atwood Atwrench:

"The last feature on the Atwrench is the bottle opener. Bottle openers are for some reason standard on most custom pocket tools these days. I am not sure if it’s just a cleaver use of space that would otherwise be wasted or if pocket tool makers need some brews to drink after a long day."

I feel the same way about all the corkscrews on SAKs - I have very little need for them either so carry phillips based ones.

But they could easily add the mini screwdriver on to many of their components (and have)... =S

As a corkscrew fan I feel I must stand up for my tool of choice here.  :D

Apart from the obvious opening of wine bottles, there are actually a few other things people use them for (knots etc) and of course they hold that handy screwdriver.  But the bottom line is, a SAK ain't a SAK without a corkscrew.  :D

I partially agree here, the corkscrew is pretty distinctive.  When people make fun of SAK's they always mention the corkscrew.  Famous question regarding SAK's, "but what do you need a corkscrew for" that's the one most people I've come across think of first.  So it's a pretty definitive feature of the SAK.  However, I do like the Tinker and Super Tinker very much.  Even if that screw driver is heck on my knuckles.

I have one of Brian's tools coming and I asked if he could make something with a bottle opener on it.
I guess it really comes down to what you figure you'll use the most.  I find when I'm not using
a cutting tool I'm involved with bit drivers and usually that's either a flathead or a phillips.
Aside from that when the work's done and somebody hands you an "import" that doesn't twist off...  ::)

Just look at the Skeletool... LM has chosen to put a (double-ended flat/phillips) bit driver, carabiner, blade, and bottle opener on that tool (along with pliers, of course... ::)) Seems like a standard minimal configuration among tool manufacturers.

Plus, a bottle opener can be trivially designed to also be used like a 1/4'' bit driver in a pinch...

That's one issue I have with the Skeletool. If you have a pair of pliers you already have a bottle opener, put a can opener on there, or something else.

Well said.  And some of the best SAKs have corkscrews and philips screwdrivers.
