Something a little different
on: October 25, 2009, 05:57:51 AM
Tired of the boring appearance of "tactical" black aluminum tube flashlights?

Check out these babies:

The Icon Modus is designed by a Surefire engineer to be more of a utility light targeted at the general user, rather than the cops and military.

The first Icons have a very clever regulator circuit that imperceptibly ramps down the output while in use to conserve the battery.

You mean a bit like an unregulated circuit, the light just gets dimmer ;)

They certainly look more fun than most of the dull looking lights we see.  Reminds me of a pack of Mini Sharpies :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I can imagine myself pulling one of these out believing it to be a marker then marveling at the invisible ink that seems to glow. =o

Not exactly.

When switched on it always starts at max output, then ramps down linearly at something like 7 percent/minute down to about 30% of max after 10 minutes.  Supposedly the gradual ramp down is imperceptible to the human eye.

At this point, if you switch off then on again it returns to max brightness and begins ramping down again.

The designer has optimized the Icon to maximize usefull output and runtime for common Alkaline cells.

This guy's approach may seem a little unorthodox, but he's probably one of the very best designers working in the field of portable lighting.

Full Disclosure:  I don't yet own an Icon, but have been very impressed with the reviews over on CPF.

The Icon lights aren't just designed by some Surefire engineer. There designed by Paul Kim, SureFire's Vice President of Engineering. The unique regulating circuitry that they feature goes with the reasoning that the average person only uses a flashlight for a small amount of time to do a certain task. Say walking the dog or getting something out of the car trunk. You use the light to do the task and it will decrease slowly in output while you accomplish what your doing. Then the next time you use the light it's starts out at 100% again.

Well, I'm still not convinced as to the usefullness of the regulation but the proof of th epudding will be in whether I go back for seconds :D

I have runtimes on the Icon Rogue, but not this one yet.  I'll have a look around.

You will be a bit surprised at the graphs.  It really takes a nosedive in brightness after 10 minutes of runtime.  Supposedly, it isn't noticeable in use...

Might not be quite my thing design wise, but I can see others loving them, my daughter being one (so long as it's red she'll love anything ::)).

Actually, a pack of six large and six mini Sharpies. ;)  Ooh, I can see it now:  a plastic pack of all twelve on sell at Costco beside the actual Sharpies. >.>; *coughs* XD

Heat shouldn't be a problem with the nosedive regulation.

Looks like the designer has thermal issues under control:

Yeah, it looks like the "pill" is reaching nearly 70 and the case around the pill is reaching close to 60.
