Victorinox 91mm Tools Evolution
on: October 17, 2009, 11:57:44 PM
I am working on a page that contains variations of different tools in 91mm Victorionx SAKS:
http://victorinox.saam007.com/91mmtools.php

I already contact some members here for help and some was a great help in getting pictures and information (members: ICanFixThat, Neil, Duder, stressmaster5000, jzmtl and others). We got almost all the pictures needed for the page but I have some trouble refine the dates (missing the wood-saw and backspring phillips but ICanFixThat helps me with it).

Wood-saw - I know of 3 variations.
Backspring phillips - ICanFixThat found 6 variations but they might be more.
Scissros - There are much more variations (older then the first version) will be expanded later on.

The dates in the page based on documents found on the web, other members posts and knowledge.

If anyone can help refine the dates and/or have stuff to add feel free to contact me or post here.

I'd never noticed the file change in 1990.

I can't think of anything to add off the top of my head but if I find anything I'll be sure to let you know  :tu:

Hmmmm, with rise of cocaine use in the 1970's, powder not crack, it seems Victorinox really missed out on a great marketing tool by not adding the Pharmaceutical Spatula until 1992.     :D :D :D

I have bought 2x Vic SAK's (tinker- 1991 and craftsman- 1996, minus the pliers but with fish scaler-ruler) that have ROUND phillips screwdriver WITH can key.

The author completely skips that fact- square/can key, then round/no can key.

You right. It just I only got two types of Phillips screwdrivers (one on 60s SAK - square with file and the new round one on few other new saks) so I really can't tell all the variations. ICanFixThat doing a great work investigating the issue (and other issues as well) and I hope soon we will get pictures of all variations.

I noticed you didn't include the large blade, was there a reason you left it out? And it would be nice to find out when the scale went from solid to hollow (early 90's, I think?) and when various colors were introduced. But, that's only hard core collector information, it may be hard to pin that last one down. Excellent work though, that's the most comprehensive list I have seen to date!

Shouldn't the long/short in-line Phillips and the glass/plastic magnifier change in the same year?  :)

Nope. The shorter in-line phillips changed released when the LED was released (at least according to the information I have). The magnifier changed later while it still combined with the long phillips.

The reason is that I thought to create a page about large blade & signatures - it isn't just 2-4 variations like other tools.
Scalles ... that is really hard work...

Re: analog clocks.

The earliest clocks were self winding, not battery operated.  I don't know if the switch is directly tied to Roman numerals to Arabic numerals, however.

LOVE that site.  It's going to Bookmarks.  :tu:

oooo... I need one of those. I love clocks. My SuperTimer is Roman numerals and I got TimeKeeper on the way with Arabic numerals but both work are battery.
If anyone own one and can share info/pics it would be great.

I have read about these self-winding or hand-winding clocks before and I tried to find one, but I`ve never seen one. I asked Victorinox about them but they could not tell me about those either. And I asked dealers who have sold Victorinox knives for decades and they also have never seen those.

Do they really exist ?
Maybe there were only prototypes of them or it was writen wrong somewhere...

Does someone have fotos or infos about these watches ?

This page has worked out fantastic!  A really good resource and complements the wiki which is organized across different lines.

Phillips
....
The author completely skips that fact- square/can key, then round/no can key.

Not exactly, those descriptions are just not completed.  There is a small question of 5, 6 or 7 variations and due to a timing issue the photos have not yet been included on the page.  Of those descriptions listed 2 should note Can-Key.  I'm sure the pics will be there shortly.

Analog Clock
I too am very unsure there was ever an analog clock in the scales of a SAK for anything other than maybe a Concept prototype.   I've check my sources and Victorinox provided original notes on the introduction and the timepiece was always listed as quartz.  Technically it would have been quite difficult, and the cost would have been extremely high.

I've put a note on the wiki-page asking for someone to confirm the existence of a mechanical timepiece.  Does anyone have more information they can provide?

Perhaps you should ask the person that put that info on the "Timekeeper" wicki page?

According to the history on the page it looks like the user "jazzbass" is the one who put that info down. I believe he uses the same user name on KnifeForums.

I think a self-winding watch would not be very usefull in a knife. If ever it must have been a hand-winding watch.
The self-winding (automatic) mechanism makes sense in a wrissmurfch which is in a constant movement when carried. But a knife or a pocket-watch carried in a pocket would not be moved enough to take advantage of a self-winding clockwork. That`s why pocket-watches usually have a hand-winding clockwork.

And a self-winding clockwork is bigger (thicker) than an equal hand-winding version. I doubt there is enough space in a Victorinox Timekeeper for such a clockwork.

That`s why I think it must have been a hand-winding watch, if it really ever existed.

Something went wrong in my last post. In the second line is something that I have not written. The correct word must be "wrist-watch".

I don`t know where this strange word came from... ???

When I try to write the word "wrist-watch" without the hyphen it comes out like in my last post. Can someone explain this ? Maybe one of you could try to write this word as a test... very strange...

Yes, that "new" to you meaning is how we usually define it here in the US.  That's why it's included in the filter.
