Traveller Lite Opinions needed
on: October 18, 2009, 03:04:31 PM
I get the feeling asking this question is going to be like asking children if they like candy but, I was wondering what those of you that own a Vic Traveller Lite thinks of it?  I've been trying to decide whether to get the Traveller or Altimeter.  If I get the Traveller I figure I might was well get the Traveller Lite.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks.

I take mine away with me on holiday/vacation every time as the light and clock/alarm come in handy in hotels, not to mention the scissors and the blade and the....

I could do with a magnifier on it too, that would be useful (for me that is)

Not a fan to be honest, as I feel electronics and sak's should be kept separate :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

They are nice knives but I don't really have a use for one. Wanna buy a Voyager in grey instead?

I happen to have one lying around here unused :D

I like the Traveller Lite!  However, I find it hard to recommend it to others because of the price.  Right now you can get a Voyager for a great price, last one cost me $29.  I tried to sell an new Altimeter (non plus) for something like $35 on knife-forums not that long ago and there were no takers.

If I remember right the best price on the Traveller light is $100.00, and most places want more.

I also have some misgivings about mixing electronics in the SAK, but I guess you can't stand still.  So I'm trying to accept it; if they do break well you still have the knife.  My biggest problem is since they have a hardtime making a profit on the knives they try to make up for it on the electronics which are actually a fraction of the cost of the rest of the knife.

So if price is not a problem I'd go for the traveller and have it all in one package!

I have no issues with mixing electronics with SAKs.

With that said, I have only the Altimeter Plus right now. I like how it can predict the weather if you pay close enough attention. I am thinking, all things being equal, that would be very useful on an expedition.

I can't really give my opinion on any of the electronic-incorporated SAKs, not even any with the LED light, whether 58mm or 91mm, but I must comment on the premise of the Traveller/Traveller Lite; personally - granted, this is if knives were allowed on planes (since I carry-on only), I could definitely see a Traveller Lite being my sole SAK on a trip.  Yes, it's effectively a Climber plus the electronics scale, but it would allow me to keep an eye on the weather, for a bit more warning against drastic weather changes, and if I didn't bring my cell phone with me, I could use that as my alarm clock.

So, yes, the knife is quite expensive - too expensive, in my opinion - for a particular niche or two, it would be tempting.  Granted, with that said, I'd probably just grab a regular Climber Plus or an Explorer Plus and toss in a travel alarm clock and watch, but your mileage may vary. :D

They are way too expensive.   Back at the start of the year when SAKs were on ebay UK, you could grab a nib grey Voyager for under £20.  Compare that to the Traveller Lite  :ahhh

I did have a Traveller Lite for a while.  I ordered it special and was really looking forward to it.  I was so disappointed when it arrived, I really disliked the textured translucent scales :(  That's just me though.

Cleaning can be a real issue with the electronics SAKs.  I once had a Voyager that was grim enough to require a full soak and scrub.  The only option you have is to remove the scales and they are not easy to remove without cracking them.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

With the exception of a few it seems the consensus I'm getting is the Traveller Lite is too expensive or people don't like mixing SAK's and electronics.  I don't mind having a digital display on an SAK.  I don't know about the need for a barometer though.  I don't plan on using it on any expeditions.  :D  I do like the idea of a thermometer though.  I have a Voyager but it just has a clock, alarm and timer.  The Altimeter Plus seems like a better choice for what I'm looking for.  I like the tool array better than the Traveller Lite, it has a thermometer and the price is about half that of a Traveller.  Thanks for all of your input.  It helps me narrow down my decision.  Any other input is appreciated.  Especially about the Altimeter Plus.   :climber:

I like it, every sak lover should have at least one "electric" thingymabob  :sak:

I decided to save a little $ and go with the Altimeter Plus.  The function I wanted the most was the thermometer and it has it so that should suffice.
