My oldest brother used to work for the company that makes the jaws of life. Way back when, he could stay over after work & use their tools on his own freetime. He built a stainless cannon. It was beautiful. It had brass rivets, a turn crank on the back to raise & lower the barrel, & was mounted to a 100lb scrap of wood for weight issues. It would fire a .50 caliber ball bearing around a mile. (Don't ask) We contribute from time to time in a New Years tradition in a tiny town called Cherryville NC of firing our black powder rifles in celebration of Confederate soldiers & that goes on for 18+ hours & converges on the highschool football field in a blaze of musketsmoke. When he had the cannon, he would take it on the rounds & fire it at all the different locations until too many small children would walk in front of the lit fused cannon & wouldn't understand to move when "fire in the whole" was yelled. He eventually gave it to his buddy. I miss that cannon! :-[

I used to belong to our local black powder chapter and quite enjoyed it for a couple of years.  Those cannons look

I don't have a black powder canon but would like to. But i do have three 44cal black powder cap and ball revolvers and a 50 cal percussion rifle that i shoot once a week weather permitting. One of my cap and ball revolvers is a replica Colt Walker that some consider to it be a canon that takes a max charge of 60gr black powder per chamber.   :o

I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Very nice. I have a Colt .36 Navy c&b replica and a 1861 .58 cal Springfield Rifle Musket that I shoot all the time. I love black powder.

The .58 cal is a blast to shoot. It is also very accurate. The charge it uses is surprising small. It uses between 50 to 70 grains of powered and a 500 grain minie ball.

OK The story I am about to tell is the truth, and was verified by my wife to bob and def at the meetup.

My wife informed me years ago that I was not responsible enough for a cannon. She would not let me have one for the life of me.

So in my infinate wisdom I ordered one . It was  a Mortar that fired beercans filled with concrete. So one night after work we took the cannon into the pit and drank a bunch of beer. We took the cans and filled them witih sand and sealed them with 2 part fast dry epoxy. I had the night before visited several gun stores in the area esentially cleaning them out of all the powder I could get for the cannon . it was esentially 8 pounds of the stuff. We then sent cans into the forest (or what we thought was the forest) We did this for 20 shots and were finally stopped by the police car that rudely stopped us from going any father. Come to find out was that the woods were not woods but a horse padduck. We peppered the crap out of the area and did not hurt any horses, but lost the cannon to the cops.

Fast forward now 3 monthes. Monster .com has a road race that my company helps out with by setting up the course for the beginning and the ending with jersey barriers we provide. But they actually started the race with my impounded cannon! I cant fire it but the police can.

Turns out my wife is right .... I am irresponsible. Also ask Bob about this. It is not a story as stated above my wife will verify every word of it. As I told Bob and Def at the meetup. My life is a comic book with a ton of police fun and usually a ambulance ride at the end.

My friend sent me a 6" X 3" piece of solid steel. It has a 1" bore and 1-1/4" thick walls. Hmm... what should I do with it?

That'd work.  You could use it as a paperweight at the same time :)

Excellent idea.  How about combine all three John and just use it as a paper weight that has a couple of pens in it but also has a nice flower?  :P

Get some calipers and what size the bore is. If a shotgun slug fits it your in luck Midway sells the mold for 20.00.
