3 Layers or less, whats your favorite?
on: October 20, 2009, 05:22:19 AM
Now that I am getting familiar with SAK's, I am quickly finding out, the more layers they have, the less likely I'll carry them.

I think I am most comfy with 3 layers or less.  Which got me thinking, what is your favorite SAK that is 3 layers or less?

In my personal collection, I have to say my 2 layer Scientist is my fave in this category.  ;)

I'm actually ok with carrying up to 4 layers (Mountaineer) but most of the time I carry either a 2 layer (more than likely a cadet) or a 3 layer (Climber).  It really does depend on my mood or what I'm doing.  :)

Vic's greatest creation ever: the TINKER.

The 2-layer TINKER always has been, and likely always will be, my very favorite SAK.  Nothing else compares.

Lately, the 3-layer OH-GAK is a close second.

In third place is the 3-layer Mechanic.

Any SAK over 3-layers never will never get any pocket time.

But, my 3-layer SAKs don't get as much pocket time as the old reliable 2-layer TINKER.

I know I'm nuts, but my alox solo is my favorite. I had to trade my soul to get that one and I love it!  :tu:

Close- I myself am also a big fan of the Tinker and Mechanic- my EDC for years was the Mechanic, for large periods of time it was the only large SAK I even owned.

I would be more into the Scientist if only it had a reamer- I love the inline phillips though, such a tragedy they won't bring the Scientist back.

I have 2 recommendations dependant of where you are.  For a rural environment I'd go with a Farmer, and for a more urban environment I'd go with a Mechanic.

Standard Vic models would have to be the Compact or the Scientist.  If I'm allowed mods then it's either my Huntsman Slim (Compact plus saw) or the Rab (Sportsman plus saw).  Of the four the Rab is getting the most pocket time ATM. :)

It's a toss-up:

1.  Farmer (in Blue)
2. Alox Lumberjack
3.  Battle Surgeon    ???     :D

Pictures to follow...  ;)

I also can't pick just one....  I would definitely say the Farmer, but the Yeoman runs a tight second.

Monroe Designs makes a cool little gadget called a Dangler . It basically hangs the SAK off the top of your pocket . Weight/bulk perception is minimal . With the use of this little fella I often pack a Ranger , I think it would handle a Swisschamp OK .

In so far as three layer SAK's are concerned , I would say the alox Pioneer /Soldier and Farmer.

You say three layers or less, but I'll start out with a four layer. :D

In order of preference:

1.  Explorer Plus
2.  Cadet (although the Cadet II is a nifty little knife. ^^)
3.  Sportsman II
4.  Waiter

I think I would have to one day make or get a Rab, though; my Artisan is a Tinker Small with an added scissors and saw; ooh, or a Sportsman II with a pair of scissors added. :)

I did that one once but was dissapointed with it.  Once in your pocket it really didn't feel much smaller than a Climber TBH.  IIRC it's called an Alumnus.  The scissors went into making my Cadet with scissors, or the Alox Alumnus.

I know everyone loves the Farmer, and it IS a great knife. I have 3, so I can't deny the appeal. However, for me, the new Pioneer Harvester I got knocked the Farmer off it's perch as favorite alox. I don't open cans, but I do find the small blade very useful, despite a distinct lack of actual pruning in my everyday life. That plus the fact that mine came with no key ring attachment = winner in my book. I hate the key ring attachment on 93mm alox knives.

Well, if I have a Classic on my keychain it pretty hard to beat a Farmer, however, if I don't then I'd probably go with a Super Tinker.
