V-cutter over scissors
on: October 23, 2009, 04:40:27 AM
I was having a discussion with a friend, and he asked what the advantage of the v-cutter was over scissors. I couldn't come up with a good answer. Anybody have some thoughts?

Saves you a second or two when cutting straps, take up one less layer. That said I hate v-cutter since it's basically disposable, and doesn't actually work well even when it's new.

I wonder if one would fit in a PPP. I know SOG says it won't but they say that about the scissors and do fit.

It should fit but don't think it'll work well. The cut opening is toward the outside so without a lock as soon as you try to hook something with it, it'll fold.

The v-cutter isn't as versatile as the scissors right? Is there anything the v-cutter does better, besides speed?

None that I've noticed, but perhaps in some specific situations when scissors don't fit or awkward to use?

I havent used the v-cutter much since I didnt think it worked well at all so replaced it with a serrated blade. But to be honest I didnt give it much of a chance since I had no use for it anyway. I do not need or want scissors, v-cutter on my PowerLock. But if I did I`d choose the scissors over the v-cutter.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

The V-cutter is safer to use in an emergency situation for cutting seatbelts to free injured motorists.  There is virtually no danger of injuring someone this way.  A knife would be dangerous in this situation and scissors would be useless.

I don't use the V-cutter or the scissors. Rope and paracord is cut with the serrated blade and if I got to cut paper I have a Micra with me.

In my humble opinion the only thing that can cut a seatbelt fast enough and hassle free is a serrated blade. Besides, if I where too chose a MT with rescue in mind I would go for a SURGE or other tool with one hand opening.

I took mine out of a SOG in favour of the serrated blade too.

I figured if I want a rescue tool with a cutter on, I'll get a dedicated one to keep in the car. Oh no, that means I have an excuse to buy another tool  >:D

On my point of view, I think the V-cut is better compare with the scissor of SOG. The scissor of SOG is too fragile to compare with LM and Swisstool. But for V-cut, you can use it in some emergent situation, such as cutting the seatbelt, ropes or straps very quickly and safely. So I retain the V-cut of my Powerlock and bring a LM S4 on my keychain separatetly as compensation!

My V-cut was never able to cut something like a seatbelt, and deffinetly not now because it's dull.  However, I do find it useful for fishing line and other light duty operations, and it doesn't take up any space internaly as I mounted it on the outside of the tool (the bolts are long enough).  it doesn't need to lock because the force applied is pulling parallel to the v-cut.  All in all, it is a good idea of a tool, but not exactly ready for anything thrown at it.  I think it needs to be bigger and sharper, then it would cut belts, and be extremely handy mounted on the outside if the tool.

Agreed. :salute:  And if they made the razor blades replaceable it would be even better.

Wow, it is a good idea to mounted the V-cut outside of the tool! Why I never think about it? It is great that I could add a serrate blade now!
I agree with you that SOG should make the V-cut biggere and sharper. Hope one day I could give a new V-cut!
Thanks! :salute:

When I got my SOG I had read all the negative reviews about their scissors but I gave the scissors
a try anyway. They sucked! couldn't even cut paper right (and they were brand new), very poor at
cutting paracord. To awkward, poor design and just didn't work.

I ordered a V-cutter, switched it out and never looked back. The V-cutter cuts paracord fast and clean.
and like stated should cut web type materials (seat-belts) safely if you need too.

I really I really like the v-cutter.  The problem I see is sharpening it.  Mine it getting pretty dull from use and it looks like the only option is to replace it.  I was thinking about removing the rivets and tapping the holes and ordering new blades.  like the v-cutter.  The problem I see is sharpening it.  Mine it getting pretty dull from use and it looks like the only option is to replace it.  I was thinking about removing the rivets and tapping the holes and ordering new blades.

The serrated line cutter was ten times better than v cutter and easily sharpened, but I think it's discontinued in favor of v-cutter. Wonder if it's because you now need to keep buying replacement from them.  ???

This is my first post on this forum.   I have been a member on other knife forums for a few years and finally found my way over here.  I really like my v cutter on the powerassist.  I had the scissors on my powerlock and never really cared for them, it seemed like the blades didn't come together right.  I would like to see the v cutter moved to the outside of the powerassist and the serrated moved inside the handle.  I think having the v cutter on the outside of the tool would give you easier access to the tool in an emergency situation.  This would also allow for it to be beefed up.  I agree that while the concept is a great idea the design is a little undersized.
