It's in the eye of the beholder- if it's got your country's markings on it, it's beautiful.  If it has enemy markings on it, it's the worst thing you've ever seen... for a few seconds at least!

I really want a Goblin for xmas now - I think it might fit on the drive
I'm not sure I can help you get that one, hon.  :D
Groupbuy..??   :D  :D
Slight problem A). you would also a B 36 which if that fits in your drive I would like to see it, and the peacemaker is not that good looking either, B). the Goblin never really worked

IIRC, the Goblin worked insofar as they built some prototypes to prove the concept and a modified B-36 actually dropped and then recovered the Goblin in midair.

Seem to remember seeing a film of a Goblin dropping, flying around independently, and then re-docking with its mothership.

Goblin never went into production, but the prototype actually worked.

Goblin was just one of the the many Cold War weapons systems that were tested for feasability, but weren't produced for one reason or another: the Valkyrie hypersonic bomber, the nuclear jet powered bomber, and many others.

I love the Goblin, but the Nighthawk is ugly as hell. Damned, it has to be the ugliest piece of multi-million dollar crap ever!

As a former Infantryman, the A-10 is the most beautiful plane I've ever seen. When they're in the air you know the bad guy's tanks ain't gonna be a problem. HOOAH!!!!

yes it did "work" there where 2 prototypes they were launched and retrieved several times from an EB-29B,

BUT upon returning to the mother ship the prop turbulence was awlful and there where problems with reattching with the mother ship, one had to crash land due to the combination that made it crash into the B29 (with 4 Engines Pulling props) it would of never worked with the B36 (with 6 pushing props)

B36

it is alot like the the F2Y Sea Dart yeah it "work" as the only supersonic seaplane  but it was so flawed that it never worked

I would add the V-22 Osprey to the mix;
as far as looks for the "Osprey" idea I love the Bell XV-3

she is a lovely little thing to see :)

At the time, the F-4 Phantom II was considered ugly:

(Image removed from quote.)

Initially it was a very sleek, beautiful aircraft until the wind tunnel testing cause the wings to be bent and dog toothed, and the pilots all insisting they still wanted guns on planes, the cockpit was extended to add a weapons systems officer, the intakes were redesigned and the body was given the "Coke bottle" contour.  The Phantom has had an illustrious career and proved itself time and again, but I can still imagine how depressed the initial designer was after seeing what happened to his initial, beautiful design!

Oh, and the A-10 isn't ugly either!   :twak:

I've always liked the F-4 too.   Unique, but not ugly...

I also think the Phantom is one of the most beautiful planes out there, but it wasn't a traditional beauty in any sense of the word.  It's always been one of my favorite planes and I used to read up about it constantly.  Any plane that can take a missile into the intake and still fly home is a winner in my book.  If I recall correctly, the only other planes that could take that level of damage and still fly was the B-17.

The Vickers Wellington was rightly famed for the sheer level of damage it's geodesic structure could absorb :)

Goblin could have been made to work if they stuck with it, but the question is SHOULD it have been made to work?

Did it really make sense for long range penetration bombers to carry their own fighter escorts?  Maybe it did, when the program started, but rapid advances in electronics and missile technology made Goblin obsolete before its prototypes flew.

The hypersonic, compression lift Valkyrie was another approach to a long range pentrator.  A few prototypes were built and flown to prove that the compression lift worked and that Valkyrie was capable of hypersonic flight.  At least one was destroyed in testing, which is par for the course with prototypes.

Valkyrie was abandoned, like Goblin, for operational and strategic reasons, not because it couldn't be made to work.

Yeah, I remember seeing the Sea Dart on Discovery Channel.

Many of these programs could have been made to work, but the
"bang for the buck" just wasn't there.

Pilots described the Phantom as looking like it had been "kicked in the ass" due to its unusual tail config.

Certainly the champion heavyweight slugger of its time, the Phantom was so good that the Air Force was FORCED to adopt it.

Phantom began life as a Naval interceptor designed for carrier use and the Air Force resented having to accept a Navy plane.

Over 5000 were built and delivered, a record for any American jet fighter.

Outstanding tank buster that can operate slow and low enough to be very effective, and it has great loiter capability.

Loiter capabiltiy and slow and low attack are very desirable for aircraft with the mission of supporting ground troops.

So what is the Air Force attitude toward the A-10?

They hate it.

They've tried to phase out the A-10 program several times to replace it with traditional attack jets.  They may have finally suceeded.

The Air Force has never really liked its mission of tactical support for the Army.  Air Force loves the air superiority and strategic bombing stuff - tactical support for troops on ground tends to come last.

on a goblin side note there also was the Republic YRF-84F Ficon

which is better looking and wirder

both failed

also in the neat idea that never paned out the Avro Canada VZ-9AV Avrocar

saddly insted of the hoped for supersonic vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) fighter-bomber she only went 35mph, got 5 feet off the ground, and only use they could find was blowing ice off the runway. :-\
