Mayday...Cadet help needed, Please
on: October 25, 2009, 05:28:29 AM
Hi all,
So I got out my new orange Cadet and was looking it over and such and noticed something...after only about 3 times opening the nail file it started grinding really really badly.  It felt stiff when I opened it but it didn't grind...now it is grinding and the oil that comes on all new SAKs is turning black...is there something in there or is this something that needs to be looked at?  I'm not sure I could fix it without breaking it.  I tried oiling it and working it back and forth but the grinding is getting worse...it doesn't even snap anymore.  Any ideas or suggestions?  Everything else is fine. Help?

Maybe run it thru the dishwasher then let it sit overnight in 3 in 1 oil or Remington gun oil in a ziplock bag? Worked for a gritty bear jaws i once had.

Have you cut any fruit with it? Scrub with soap and toothbrush and see if it helps.

Floss the pivot areas as well.

I had a similar experience with the plier/handle joint on an old PST. Was working fine for weeks and then one day the handle surface started shaving off the plier tang. Even with oil, I tried cleaning it but it just kept going until enough material was abraded away to stop whatever contact there was. Very odd.

Definitely get in there with a toothbrush.

I usually do this in the shower.

That's right.

I shower with my tools.

What, you wanna fight about it? :D

Both of my Cadet's nail files scrape slightly against the main blade, right from when I first took them out of the box. They make a scratching sound every single time I close them.

One of them was particularly bad though. The knife blade was at slightly the wrong angle, so that it was pressing against the nail file.

I just gave the blade a little tug away from the file, and it popped into the right alignment.

Looking down at the Cadet from the top, the file should be flush against the outer liner, and the knife blade should be completely flush against the inner liner.

There should be a little gap between the blade and file at the base of the nail file, which quickly narrows so that the last half of the file is pressing directly against the blade.

Do you see any scratches on the side of the blade? If not, it is more likely a problem with some sort of grit in the pivot. Is the knife still basically unused, or do you recall doing anything with it that might have gunked it up?

Like others have said, oil, very hot water & dish soap, dental floss, toothbrushes, etc. are the usual ways to clean pivots.

I have read that it is sometimes possible to loosen the action a little by lightly hammering the pin with a punch. I have never done it myself though and would strongly recommend you get more info from someone more knowledgeable than myself before trying it. It doesn't sound like this is what is causing your problem, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I tried washing it (I don't have a dishwasher) oil, and toothbrush and now the main blade does the same thing...grrr...I might have to get nasty with it later today.  Thanks for the advice.  I'll try the dental floss.  It is unused.  All I've done is open and close it and admire how pretty it is. LOL  haven't used it for anything.  Grrrr...I'll get it though.  Any other advice welcome.

Here's a different angle.. if you've only just got it take it back and ask them to swap it for another.  Save you the grief :)

That does make life trickier   In that case..

- lots of oil, open and close many times
- scrub some dish soap in there with a toothbrush
- wash out with very hot water opening and closing the tools under the stream
- dry thoroughly and then oil again
- repeat the above cycle up to three times
- if still no good its mod fodder  :-\

Ok, so I did the washing thing with hot water tooth brush oil and repeat...and it still didn't totally fix the problem...well it did then the problem came back so I left it alone and just glared at it all day and some last night.  Cussed at it a little bit, then discovered the problem with the Pioneer....this morning the Cadet works fine.  Apparently glaring and cussing at it scared whatever was causing the problem right out of it.  I'm confused.  But not questioning it.  I'm still going back to my climber though.  :)
