I've got mixed feelings about that...it seems like over the past year I've been compensating for being so safe for the past 3 decades ???
Thats true, you have had a bit of a rough one, are there any lasting effect from the big one you had ???
Occasionally I'll feel a little soreness in the ribs after strenous exertion,of course there's still the road rash badges....other than that,I'm fit as a fiddle, a bit out of tune, but fit anyway.

So what do you all think of shaft-driven bikes then?

I like the concept a lot, but there are a lot of frictional loses in that system :(, and when you've only half a hourse power to work with, any power loss can be a bummer :D

But with a bit more development, they could be the future of utility and touring bikes :)

I can easily picture a shaft driven bike being extremely popular in the cities of Europe. I agree with Micky,it's applications would like likely be in the same riding conditions that hubbed bikes are best at.

The 21st century debate? Belt vs.Shaft? I remember none too fondly back in the days of bell bottoms, pants legs being eaten up by chains.

You fashion icon you :D, first bell bottoms, then tutu's, truly a man of style and breeding :D

I don't see the hub or deraliurs being displaced any time soon, but I do see some alternatives worming there way in over the next couple of decades :)

I read somewhere that shaft losses were only about 5%.  I like shaft-driven motorcycles a lot.

Unless you down shift in the wet to fast :D

I'd be interested in that article if you remember where you saw it mate, 5% is pretty negligable, but you've got to imagine they weigh a lot more than existing gear systems, and probably more importantly, cost a lot more to produce ;)

wow,i threw out the sprocket cassette and derailleur today and the click switch too,and put in a single speed conversion kit with 14t sprocket, with 38t on front, instead of old 36t,and also changed the double crown away, and wrenched in a an old but just tuned rock shoXXX 125mm single crown psylo fork, and we headed into town festivals to sip some brew, and man that bike of mine was mean to ride thru the parks to home in almost complete darkness in little rain, just listenin the mp3 pounding and driving thru crossroads with stop signs and red lights.im an outlaw :D

I see the listed advantage of derailer has over hub is more gears, like 30 vs. 12, but why the hell do you need that many gears? My cheap road bike has 7 in the back and 3 in front, but I usually only change back ones, and only change front when back has reached end. So that's essentially only 9 gears I' use. Does anybody actually calculate the gear ratio of every possible combination and shift accordingly? I'd think the time wasted shifting is more than time saved accelerating.

i hear u.

i usue, when i se gears, only the system with one sprocket in front and from 6 to nine at back, thats more than enough.and saves me from adjusting those cranky front derailleurs.and chains keep in their placer much better when theres nothin more than one in front.it requires a chainguide to be installed but thats usually just an hour or two and doesnt need any special tools.

My main ride,a Raleigh Wyoming still has friction shifting.Kind of gives me a sense of empowerment knowing how to ease into gears.
