TiNi hardcased
on: September 23, 2006, 03:08:17 AM
Does anyone else have a SOG tool with the gold titanium nitride (TiNi) plating? Besides being rather striking to look at, the stuff is dang near indestructable. No scratches or corrosion to worry about, and no signs of fading with age. Neat stuff.

I was looking at those a while back and thought it was pretty darned sweet.

I'd love to get my hands on one, especially now that you've said there's a point to it!

At the machine shop where I work, many of the tool bits are TiNi coated these days. Drills, taps, milling cutters, carbide lathe bits, etc. Cutting various types of metal, they hold an edge much longer than the older uncoated tools.

Does SOG make them like that or can I send my SOG in to get it done?

SOG sold TiNi coated tools (and their knives) as a regular catalog item. I've never seen anything about sending an existing tool in to be coated.

Probably easier to get one that's already done rather than try to get an existing one done.  Too much of a pain to disassemble the tool, clean it, coat it, reassemble and send back.

Purdy and indestructable. Makes a guy wonder why other manufacturers don't offer TiNi plated tools.   ???

My guess would bve a cost issue.... not to mention a pain in the bum issie of actually doing it, not to mention that Leatherman isn't just plating their stuff in titanium, but actually using it to make the tools.

That green monster is rearing it's ugly head again. You have no idea how long I have wanted something in gold TiNi, but......we won't go there.

It's nice to have the pliers coated but I wish the drivers and some of the other tools were coated as well.

I think I stated this earlier in the thread, but it bears repeating: The best thing about TiNi coating is that it doesn't scratch.

Dumb question, but... how does it hold up on the teeth of the plier? There, scratching isn't an issue so much as actual plastic deformation of the teeth. Does the TiNi chip/flake/spall/peel?

90-95 Rockwell... DAMN, they should coat their files, at least with that stuff, it would never dull!! Better not coat the knife blades, though; imagine trying to sharpen it when it's harder than your stone!!  :o

Defender, you said in an earlier post in this thread that leatherman were making thier tools out of titanium, were you meaning the handles on the charge T series, or is there anything in the works for 'more titanium' on their models?

Yeah I was referring to the Charges in general.  The Ti, XTi and TTi have titanium handles, and the AL and ALX are aluminum.

At least I am pretty certain that's what I was referring to.  It's been a while and I am too lazy to look back! :P

I've read that Leatherman was dropping hints at the Shot Show that one version of their new Freestyle tool would have a titanium frame. That would be cool. (And expensive, no doubt.)

who knows, maybe leatherman will use this to replace their T series, instead of titatanium handles, just coat the entire tool in TiNi, wonder if that would save them money?

Of course what would be really nice is to have solid titanium handles and knives and saws, with all the other implements coated in TiNi. But i dont think we can expect one of those unless you pay a small fortune to get it custom made (and even then probably not).

BTW, if the gold color is too flashy for you, then maybe black titanium nitride coating would be just right?

SOG did (does?) some of their knives in black Tini. My photo really doesn't do it justice. This thing is so black it almost glows. And it never gets scratches.

wow, looks amazing. But such a shame the rest of the tools are not also coated, and such a shame leatherman havent done this to their charge series  Cant have it all I suppose.

Looks damn nice and functional though.

Did they make the T60, T52, and/or T44 in black or just gold?

BTW, if the gold color is too flashy for you...

Don't make me post the photo of Mr. T again!

No, no, not Mr. T again!!  :o

I don't know what all models were offered with black Tini. I've never seen it as an option on the SOG site or in any of their literature. Maybe this CrossCut was some sort of special run?
