My newest tool
on: December 16, 2006, 01:40:41 AM
It begins.... while researching an article I am writing about knockoffs I decided to snag one that was on sale for $15, and it came with a free knife!

It's a hunk of crud to be sure, but there are some good features on it.  More on it later, but here's some pics of it so you can all have something to hiss at until the article is ready!

It's made by Carolina Knife and Tool, and the black part of the handle is textured which is kind of nice.

You bought yourself a cheap multi tool just before Christmas? Shame on you! Several of your relatives have no doubt already bought you that one as a gift!

(If that thing is first prize, we might have a little trouble finding any contestants.)   ;)

You got that right!  It's one of those contests where the better you score, the less you are punished!

Seriously though, this one and my other cheap multitool have some features in common that I really appreciate, and that alot of newer, better constructed multis don't.  First off is the grip- the black parts of the handles on this one are textured, and the other one is coated in rubber.  The second one is that the tools are accessible from the outside while the tool is closed.  That's not just a matter of convenience either- this design puts the blade's edge in line with the side of the tool, allowing you to use the entire length of the blade.  Tools that fold out from the inside have blades that are blocked by the lower handle.  I'll try to take a pic or two to illustrate this...

It's a hunk of junk, but at's not a total waste...  Just about 99.8% waste!

I know what you are saying Def. Sometimes these knock offs have better feature sets than the regular tools, They don't seem to be worried about patent infringement either and they often have good features from two or three manufacturers.

One of my favorite tools before I lost it, was a knock off of the original SOG plier tool. You know, the one that wasn't a folding plier job, limited tools. Good Sturdy pliers. Did what it was asked.

Yes Def, That was the one!

Wondered where it had got too LOL

Thanks for the offer, I think I will pass. I was only a callow youth then,  it was a few years ago, and I have got the Spirit now and a Wave and an EVEN BETTER Chinese knock off that takes standard hex bits! ::) ::)

This fine example was only part of a set purchased for me by my in laws a few Christmases ago.  And the scary part?  This is not one of the worst tools they have gotten for me.  I will spare you the details of the cordless Dremel Tool purchased at a local pharmacy...
