Smaller 2 blade type old Swiss knives
on: November 12, 2009, 08:00:09 PM
Got some older small 2 blade style pen knives made by Wenger and Victorinox. Here are a few photos. This is the Wenger Tahara with Horn scales to start. It is about 82mm's long. It has the special Wenger tang stamp with the 3-faces triangle like. Each side of the triangle is a man's face. I know it looks like a mountain. You can see more of this tang stamp on James Christian's website in one of the Wenger pages.

Here is an old Victorinox made with "Inoxyd" tang stamp 2 blade small pen knife. It has the fake tortise shell scales. This one is about 84mm's long.

This is a single blade model about 74mm's long with a bail. This model can be seen on a page of an older catalog. I will try to get that posted for comparison.

So why don't Victorinox and Wenger still make knives like those? ;_;

Well, I am sure you know about the Victorinox Pocket Pal and Secretary line. They basically have taken up the slack but there is also this fancy model called the Accountant. It comes in Mother of Pearl and Stainless Steel scales. I think a large reason for the departure from so many models is a fiscal reason, meaning it makes more sense to concentrate on making money rather than more models that may or may not sell very well. The machinery and tooling would be a huge cost factor. Granted they might have some old equipment that already exists to produce these older varieties. That is my 2 cents..............

Yeah, the Pocket Pal and Secretary line just doesn't look nearly the same, haha.  Granted, custom scales can be made/purchased, but yeah, I'm picky, I suppose? ^^;

For those who might want a look at the Wenger tang stamp variety and some history about that strange tang stamp on the Wenger Tahara above, you can visit this link which is part of another SAK collector's website.

This appears to be a catalog page from the early 1940's but I can not be sure. The style of photos and model numbers seem to match the excerpts from the 1942 Elsener catalog found on other websites as public info. Close examination shows the style of scales on 2 of these models I have here, the fake tortise shell and the other single blade model.
