SOG assisted opener question.
on: November 10, 2009, 12:11:59 AM
Has anyone here with a SOG AO taken the spring out?  Did it then act as a regular folder or does the spring act as part of the blade retention when closed?

I only ask as I am curious as to what will happen to my Flash Tanto when the spring inevitably breaks and I am unable to get a replacement.

I tried that with my Twitch XL. It was functional but that knife doesn't really support smooth opening and closing without the spring. Springs are generally pretty available on the market, maybe see if you can find or mic the size and look around for a replacement from somewhere like Knifekits?

Looking at this video it looks like a common coil spring, similar to my Twitch XL and maybe the Flash series. It also appears that removing the spring shouldn't have too much effect.

Thanks for the reply Spoon.  It's good to know that I wouldn't be left with a completely dud knife.

This is all assuming that SOG wouldn't just send me a spare (if and when) but I am assuming that they wouldn't be keen on people dismantling their knives.

Didn't cliosguy broke his trident's spring and been using it like that?

Try and contact them, you never know. I'm sure if they say yes we could get someone to forward them over to you.

Kershaw, although they have a very different business model, sends out springs on request. I ordered an extra for my E.T. folder and they sent me three.

I may give them a shout and see what the score is.  I'd ideally like a couple of spares as well all know how easily these things break.

Some where on a forum (not here I don't think) there is Chris@SOG mentioning that they are looking to release versions of their knives that don't include the SAT device. It's only a matter of time before they release them, course SOG is alot like Victorinox and it may take quite a few years.

That though could have easily involved any sort of internal modification.  I was concerned about ones that were designed to be AO from new.

I'll shoot them an email andyou never know, by new year I may have an answer.  :D

I assume the springs are different in each AO knife?

I don't have the bottle to take mine apart (yeah right - tomorrow, I'll do it :D)
I used to come here a lot.

I would think that they may actually be the same in each of the SOG's.  Could be wrong though.

I do on other things, just not when I asked if they could send me an assist spring.

I think shipping to me here in the UK is going to be silly money.  :(

If there is anyone in the US willing to help me out I'd be more than greatful.
I'm back!!
