This is absolutely terrible. And he was a soldier, an officer in fact. That just makes it worse.

My brother in law was stationed there for 8 years. Been there many times with him and my sister..the Killeen-Temple area of Texas. That is strange that it was an Officer...not just some hacked off enlisted guy.

Even stranger that it was a psychiatrist too. Kind of ironic that a guy who's job is to help people deal with the stresses and pressures should be unable to deal with it.

Very sad :(

I used to come here a lot.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Nidal Malik Hasan. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq. Sources tell ABC News that this would have been his first deployment.

He had never been deployed.

I'll refrain from making any other comments or connect any theoretical dots.

My heart goes out to the victims, is death by firing squad still practiced by the military court?

Lets not jump to conclusions too fast based on his ethnicity, most of middle eastern descent are good people.  Could it be true, yes...but lets wait for facts.  For now grieve for the victims and curse him as a criminal.

Disregard the above.  I heard the latest.....Im saying terrorism.

I'd say that this guy is a terrorist, but only in the sense that anyone who flips out and kills a bunch of people is a terrorist.

This guy was routinely exprsssing views completely incompatible with a serving US Army officer:
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091108/D9BRD8GO1.html

He should have been gone from the Army a long time ago.

It's nothing short of a scandal and a disgrace that the Army allowed him to stay on as a serving officer.

Ultimately, the Army brass has to bear a lot of the blame for the slaughter of innocents that occured.

So this man was fairly high ranked, and was not simply a recruit or "grunt".

Pilots are also highly ranked and "screened" so to speak.  Pilots and aircrews may be transporting bombs across America.  This doctor had access to pistols, a pilot has access to several tons of flying metal, fuel, and possibly bombs.

Anyone remember when a nuclear bomb was transported across the country by the military and no one realized it?

Just sayin...nothing much you can do about an "errant" pilot, but I'm just sayin..

If an Air Force pilot ranted in favor of the jihadist worldview, in public, at a conference in front of other AF officers, he wouldn't be allowed to continue flying.

He'd be grounded pending a psych evaluation at a minimum, and his career would be effectively over.

The AF also keeps a close eye on officers stationed in missile silos, as does the Navy with submariners involved with nukes.

I'm sure that higher ranking Army officers were well aware that this guy was a borderline nut job.

Plenty of his fellow officers reportedly heard his rantings at academic conferences at Walter Reed.  He made no attempt to conceal or tone down his jihadist worldview.

Army brass probably didn't initiate procedures to get rid of him due to fear of it harming their own careers, because it could involve lawsuits about religious discrimination and freedom of speech issues.  They know that drawing unfavorable attention from even a single US Senator can ruin their chances of ever being promoted.

The Army brass probably rationalized their inaction along these lines:  "This guy isn't a line officer, he's only a doctor - he'll never be in a postion to do any serious harm."

Sad eh? The book just published by canada's former top brass basically said the whole system is a mess, and everybody is too busy making sure his own ass is covered to do anything productive.

There is on line talk of two other shooters ( it's on the net so it has to be true ! LOL ) . If true , this makes it more likley to be terrorism , as opposed to one guy going off the rails .

Looks like you got it exactly right, duckman1975.

Even though his fellow students and profs at Walter Reed thought he was: "disconnected, aloof, paranoid, belligerent, and schizoid" they didn't drop him from the program.

Read this to see why:

Air Force pilots don't get the launch codes until high command deems it necessary. The plane could crash with nukes on board and they can lie in a lake of burning gasoline and not go off. That's not to say there wouldn't be a nasty plutonium leak what would require NEST to come clean it up.
