Have an urge to pick up a Puma bowie
on: November 14, 2009, 12:50:41 AM
Saw the Puma bowie in the catalog and really liked the look, $93, and I now have the urge to get one.  ???

The rational side of me says it's overpriced for what it is, for that much I could get better than 440A blade, and I really don't need it and will probably never use it, plus people seems to agree new Puma's quality is only average. But the other side says it's ohh so pretty, and a classic shape/material.

Any opinions?

that looks like a very nice blade, typical puma look, and the sheath looks to be of super quality too.  :tu:

I'd be very tempted at that price :)

Yes the steel's a little antiquated these days, but the quality is exceptional :tu:

Better save your pennies and buy a vintage Puma Bowie, like this one from 1980.
Much better build quality and value for money.

When i bought the knife some time ago, it was almost new and still had the factory edge which was sadly a bit uneven: around 50 degrees on one side and around 30 degrees on the other.
But i managed to solve that, and it's now a polished & hairwhittling 40 degrees inclusive.

I bought it from the original owner who had only sliced a few twigs with it when he bought it.
The rest of it's days it spent in a box in his attic.
The blade is made from carbon steel (Pumaster Steel), not stainless, but there is not a speck of rust or even discoloration on it.

Wow that's really shiny for a carbon steel blade! My only carbon blade has patina all over it.

I think I'm going to pass in the end, like you said it's not what it used to be, and the money is better spend on something I'll use.
